NAICS codes by business activity

Census lists business activities as examples of what its codes cover. Find yours from A to Z: each one names its code and its size standard.

SBA size standards

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) sets a small business size standard for most six-digit NAICS codes: the largest a business, counted with its affiliates, can be and still count as small for federal contracts under the code.

Most standards are a business's average annual receipts or its number of employees; a few financial industries use assets. Of the 1,365 six-digit codes on GovTribe, 1,117 have one: 576 in average annual receipts, 535 in employees and 6 in assets.

A federal solicitation names one NAICS code, and that code's size standard decides who can compete for a small business set-aside. The SBA's table of size standards also lists exceptions for some activities; each code's page on GovTribe shows its main standard.

Quick answers

What is a NAICS code?

A NAICS code is a two- to six-digit number from the North American Industry Classification System, which the U.S. Census Bureau publishes to classify businesses by what they do. Its 20 sectors divide into subsectors, industry groups and NAICS industries, down to six-digit national industries. GovTribe lists 1,365 six-digit codes, 212 of them retired by later editions.

How do I find my NAICS code?

Search this page for a word that describes your business, such as a product or service, or for a code. Matching codes and Census examples link to each code's page, with its definition, examples and SBA size standard. You can also browse the 20 sectors or the business activities from A to Z. Census classifies a business by its primary activity, so choose the code for the activity that brings in the most revenue.

How is NAICS different from PSC?

NAICS codes classify businesses by what they do; Product and Service Codes (PSC) classify what the federal government buys. A federal solicitation names one NAICS code, and federal contract awards record both a NAICS code and a PSC.

What are the most searched NAICS codes?

The NAICS codes GovTribe users filtered their searches by most from July 11 to October 8, 2026 were 541611 Administrative Management and General Management Consulting Services; 541512 Computer Systems Design Services; and 541519 Other Computer Related Services.
