What is a CAGE code?
A Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code is a five-character identifier for a company or organization at a specific location. The Defense Logistics Agency’s CAGE program assigns it, and agencies across the federal government use it to identify contractors and their facilities in contracting, logistics and security systems.
U.S. companies receive a CAGE code when they register in SAM.gov. Entities outside the U.S. need an NCAGE code, from their country’s national codification bureau or from NATO, before they register. A company with several locations can hold a CAGE code for each.
What is a UEI?
The Unique Entity ID (UEI) is a 12-character identifier SAM.gov assigns to each entity that does business with the federal government. Contract awards, grants and subawards name their recipients by it.
The UEI replaced the DUNS number as the government-wide identifier on . An entity can request a UEI without completing a full SAM.gov registration, but needs an active registration to receive federal contracts and most grants.

Where to find a company’s CAGE code or UEI
Search the company’s name, CAGE code or UEI above. A code that belongs to one vendor opens its GovTribe page, which lists its UEI, CAGE codes, SAM.gov registration, primary NAICS code and federal awards.
The government’s own sources are SAM.gov’s entity search and the Defense Logistics Agency’s CAGE search. A company’s CAGE code and UEI also appear on its federal contract awards.
Quick answers
What is a CAGE code?
A CAGE (Commercial and Government Entity) code is a five-character identifier the Defense Logistics Agency assigns to a company at a specific location. U.S. companies receive one when they register in SAM.gov.
How do I find a company’s CAGE code or UEI?
Search the company’s name in the CAGE code and UEI lookup on this page: each registered vendor’s GovTribe page lists its UEI and CAGE codes from SAM.gov. SAM.gov’s entity search and DLA’s CAGE search list them too.
What is a UEI?
The Unique Entity ID (UEI) is a 12-character identifier SAM.gov assigns to each entity that does business with the federal government. It replaced the DUNS number on April 4, 2022.
Is a CAGE code the same as a UEI?
No. A UEI identifies the entity across the federal government, while a CAGE code identifies it at one location, so a company has one UEI but can hold several CAGE codes.
Does it cost anything to get a CAGE code or UEI?
No. SAM.gov assigns UEIs and the Defense Logistics Agency assigns CAGE codes at no cost.
