Request for Information (RFI) Examples
Real RFIs from federal notices of the last year, by service
A request for information (RFI) is how an agency asks industry about a need before it buys: who can do the work, how it's usually done and priced, and whether small businesses can compete. Under FAR 15.201(e) an RFI is for planning only: responses aren't offers, and the agency doesn't have to buy. These are real RFIs that federal agencies attached to their notices in the last year, by the service they ask about: not blank templates, but documents to model yours on.
What an RFI usually asks
- The requirement: a short description of the need, sometimes with a draft statement of work.
- Questions for industry: capabilities, approach, pricing, lead times and the contract vehicles companies hold.
- Company information: business size and socioeconomic status, UEI and CAGE code, and the NAICS code that fits.
- How to respond: the page limit, format, due date and point of contact.
- A notice that it's for planning only: not a solicitation, and no promise of a contract.

How to use these examples
- Answering an RFI: follow its order and page limit, answer each question briefly, and show work like it you've done. It's a chance to shape the requirement and the set-aside before the solicitation.
- Writing one: see how agencies describe a need in a page or two, which questions get useful answers, and what company information they ask for.
- An RFI often comes before a solicitation: follow the notice on GovTribe to see what the agency buys next. Each example is a public record its agency posted.
