About this opportunity

NASA Johnson Space Center is requesting information on measurement approaches for core body temperature and thermoregulatory responses in astronauts during spaceflight, with responses due by October 14, 2026 (amended from October 7). This is a sources-sought RFI for information and planning purposes only; no formal solicitation currently exists.

NASA's Human Research Program seeks validated methodologies to measure and monitor core body temperature during normal daily activities, exercise, and re-entry/landing operations aboard International Space Station missions, with potential application to lunar and Martian missions. Responses should address prospective approaches using currently available technologies for low-Earth orbit, accounting for stowage, power, and communication constraints. Retrospective methodologies analyzing existing datasets through the NASA Life Sciences Data Portal are also solicited.

The RFI identifies a critical technical gap: current thermal modeling for extravehicular activity suits and environmental life support systems assumes resting core temperatures equivalent to ground-based populations, but recent ISS studies show core temperature is approximately 1 degree Celsius higher in spaceflight and increases more rapidly during exercise. Esophageal and rectal measurements represent gold standards but are impractical for routine spaceflight monitoring, while non-invasive alternatives such as the double-sensor approach require validation against accepted measures during actual spaceflight.

Work is targeted for completion by 2032 for ISS missions. Submit responses electronically to Tracy L. Quintanilla (Tracy.L.Quintanilla@nasa.gov) and Katelyn R. Jaime (Katelyn.R.Jaime@nasa.gov), referencing RFI 80JSC027CTTR.
