About this opportunity

The Department of Energy issued a Request for Information (RFI) on September 24, 2026 to solicit input on basic research challenges and capabilities needed to accelerate U.S. biotechnology leadership, with responses due October 15, 2026.

DOE's Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research program seeks perspectives from educational institutions, national laboratories, private industry, philanthropic organizations, federal agencies, and research organizations on overcoming scientific bottlenecks in transitioning from descriptive biology to predictive biosystems design. The RFI addresses three fundamental science objectives: translating genetic code and macromolecular structures into predictable biochemical functions; designing cells and metabolic pathways for controlled cellular operations; and developing quantitative models to predict plant and microorganism performance.

Respondents should address four question categories: near-term scientific bottlenecks and missing capabilities in biosystems design; high-priority biotechnology applications within biomolecular, microbial, and plant systems; effective models for public-private partnerships and cross-agency collaboration; and leveraging Genesis Mission activities for industrial translation. Responses must not exceed two pages, be submitted in machine-readable PDF format to Biotech.Input@doe.gov with a specified subject line, and include organization name and point of contact. DOE retains unlimited rights to all submitted information; respondents should not include classified, confidential, or proprietary data. This RFI is not a solicitation and imposes no obligation on the government.

Notice text

DOE seeks input on critical basic research challenges, bottlenecks, and missing capabilities needed to transition from descriptive biology to predictive biosystems design. This RFI solicits perspectives on advancing foundational science across biomolecules, cells, microbiomes, and plants to accelerate the production of bio-advantaged fuels, chemicals, and materials. Feedback is specifically requested on fundamental biodesign goals, high-priority biotechnology application areas, and effective collaboration models to help guide BER's strategic priorities, workshop planning, and future funding mechanisms.
