About this opportunity
The Department of Energy Office of Science, through Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) on behalf of Brookhaven National Laboratory, is seeking capabilities and cost estimates for three 49.2 MHz, 120 kW RF System Power Amplifiers for the Electron-Ion Collider project, with responses due December 1, 2026. This is a request for information only, not a Request for Proposal or Quote, and it commits the government to no award or payment. No set-aside is used.
The procurement covers one first article and two production units under NAICS 334220 and PSC 5996. Factory acceptance testing occurs at the contractor's facility at 98 weeks after receipt of order, followed by BSA site acceptance testing at BNL, and final completion is due at 125 weeks. The amplifiers carry a two-year warranty.
The solid-state amplifiers must deliver up to 120 kW continuous-wave RF at 49.2 MHz and operate in both CW and pulsed modes. Specified requirements include 87 dB nominal gain, 55% minimum AC-to-RF efficiency, 10 dB maximum noise figure, and die temperatures not exceeding 160°C for LDMOS or 180°C for GaN devices. The design must sustain 120 kW with up to 10% of RF-PAs failed or inhibited, with MTBF exceeding 10,000 hours for the system and 35,000 hours per amplifying stage. Cooling is water-based for at least 80% of heat removal, with air cooling for up to 20%. Required compliance includes ISO 9001, BNL-QA-101, IEC 61000-6-2 and 61000-6-4, NFPA 70E-2021, and UL 508, plus a 48-hour burn-in at full rated power.
Responses should address production experience within the last five years, full-power and burn-in test capability, LDMOS or GaN transistor preference, customer references, lead-time breakdowns for engineering and production, and cost comparisons for one unit with options versus three units. Respondents must also identify design hold-point and redesign charges, pricing validity periods, sensitivity to quantity changes, U.S. manufacturing capability, and any exceptions to the BSA General Terms and Conditions (Revision 25.0) and BNL-QA-101 (Revision 04/2025). All inquiries and submissions go only to Eric Nagel at enagel@bnl.gov. The notice names no incumbent and announces no industry day.
