About this file
This is a technical specification document for identification of utilities piping and equipment related to Capital Region Water's 2027 Sewer System Improvements Project in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The specification details requirements for plastic ribbon tape installation above direct-buried utility pipes to ensure proper identification and safety. The document references related sections covering public water utility distribution piping and sanitary sewerage gravity piping, and requires contractors to submit product data, shop drawings including valve charts and schedules, and project record documents identifying actual locations of tagged valves. Quality assurance requirements mandate compliance with ASME A13.1 standards for color scheme identification of piping systems.
The specification establishes product requirements for two types of identification materials. Standard identification tape must be a minimum of 12 inches wide by 5 mils thick with aluminum core for detection, manufactured for direct burial service, and imprinted with "CAUTION BURIED WATER LINE BELOW" or "CAUTION BURIED SEWER LINE BELOW" according to APWA Color-Code standards. Restrained joint marking tape must be a minimum of 2.5 inches wide by 4 mils thick with adhesive backing. Installation requirements specify that identification tape be buried continuously 2 feet above piping, with separate tape placement for multiple pipes in common trenches, while restrained joint marking tape must be adhered directly to pipe surfaces including around fitting and valve bells, with coordination required with trenching and backfilling work per Section 31 23 33.
