Cast-in-Place Concrete Specification Summary

This is a technical specification document for cast-in-place concrete work applicable to Capital Region Water's 2027 Sewer System Improvements Project in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The specification covers concrete work for manholes, thrust blocks, pipe encasement, anchors, and pipe cradles. The document establishes comprehensive requirements for concrete materials, mix design, and construction practices, referencing industry standards from AASHTO, the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Specific performance criteria are detailed for different applications: pipe cradles require 3,000 psi compressive strength with a 0.50 maximum water-cement ratio, while structural elements including manholes and thrust blocks must comply with PennDOT Publication 408 Class HES standards. The specification mandates concrete temperature maintenance at minimum 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum seven-day curing period and establishes strict protocols for both hot and cold weather concreting operations in accordance with ACI 305R and ACI 306R respectively.

The specification prohibits the use of calcium chloride or chloride-containing admixtures and establishes allowable admixtures including air-entraining agents, water-reducing compounds, accelerators, and retarders, all from established manufacturers meeting ASTM standards. Field quality control requirements mandate one strength test per 50 cubic yards of concrete with acceptance criteria requiring average compressive strength of three consecutive test results to equal or exceed specified strength, with no individual test result falling more than 500 psi below specification. Concrete consolidation must utilize internal vibration equipment supplemented by manual methods, and concrete placement must occur in horizontal layers of 12 to 18 inches without vertical drops exceeding four feet. The specification emphasizes continuous monolithic placement, prevention of segregation, and elimination of air pockets through proper consolidation techniques, with curing accomplished through either water curing or liquid membrane-forming compounds that restrict water loss to no more than 0.055 grams per square centimeter in 72 hours as measured by ASTM C156.
