Summary of 03 60 00 - Grouting Specification
This is a technical specification document for grouting work applicable to Capital Region Water's 2027 Sewer System Improvements Project. The specification establishes materials, quality standards, and execution requirements for non-shrink non-metallic grout, standard grout, and neat cement applications used in sewer system construction. The specification references ASTM standards for materials testing and American Concrete Institute (ACI) guidelines for placement and curing procedures. No specific project timeline, quantities, or site visit information is provided within this technical specification document, as it functions as a reference standard rather than a standalone bid solicitation.
The specification requires non-shrink non-metallic grout manufactured by approved suppliers such as U.S. Grout Corporation or FIVE STAR, with factory-premixed materials containing no corrosive elements, drying shrinkage no greater than standard cement-water mixtures, and initial set times of at least 60 minutes per ASTM C191 testing. Type II sulfate-resistant cement must be used for applications in contact with sanitary sewage, while Type I cement applies to other applications. Contractors must follow manufacturer specifications for water proportions and mixing procedures using power-operated mechanical mortar mixers. All forming, surface preparation, placement, and curing work must comply with manufacturer instructions and ACI 308 standards, with no modifications or additional materials permitted in ready-mix non-shrink grout. The specification does not address pricing, set-asides, bonding requirements, or incumbent contractor information.

03 60 00 – Grouting
1.0 General
1.1 References
A. American Society for Testing and Materials:
1. ASTM C33 – Concrete Aggregates.
2. ASTM C150 – Portland Cement.
3. ASTM C191 – Test Method for Time of Setting of Hydraulic Cement by Vicat Needle.
4. ASTM C596 – Test Method for Drying Shrinkage of Mortar Containing Portland
Cement.
5. ASTM C827 – Test Method for Early Volume Change of Cementitious Mixtures.
1.2 Product Delivery, Storage and Handling
A. The Contractor shall prevent moisture damage and contamination of materials.
B. The Contractor shall store materials in undamaged condition with seals and labels intact as packaged by the manufacturer.
1.3 Site Conditions
A. The Contractor shall protect against high and low temperatures and bad weather in accordance with American Concrete Institute standards for placement of concrete.
2.0 Products
2.1 Materials
A. Non-Shrink Non-Metallic Grout: Factory Premixed material containing no corrosive irons, aluminums, chemicals, or gypsums:
1. Grouts containing water reducers, accelerators, or fluidifiers shall have no drying shrinkage greater than the equivalent cement and water mix as tested per ASTM
C596.
2. Grout shall be non-shrink before initial set and show no expansion after set as tested per ASTM C827.
3. Initial set of grout not less than 60 minutes per ASTM C191 Test.
4. Use Type II (Sulfate Resistant) cement for grout applications in contact with sanitary sewage. Use Type I cement for all other grout applications.
5. Acceptable Manufacturer: U.S. Grout Corporation; FIVE STAR, or equal.
2.2 Grout Quality
A. Non Shrink Grout: Use ready mix type requiring only the addition of water. Do not add other materials. Water requirement proportions shall conform to manufacturer's specifications for the desired mix consistency.
B. Grout: Mixture of Portland cement, fine aggregate and water in the same proportions used in cast-in-place concrete Class A with coarse aggregate omitted.
C. Neat Cement: Mixture of Portland cement and water in the same proportions used in cast-in-place concrete Class A with fine aggregate and coarse aggregate omitted.
3.0 Execution
3.1 Preparation
A. Forming- the Contractor shall:
1. Use forming procedures that allow proper and complete placement of grout.
2. Anchor support elements so no movement is possible.
3. Remove supports only after grout has hardened.
4. Pre-treat wood forms with forming oils that may absorb moisture.
B. Preparation of Surface- the Contractor shall:
1. Non-Shrink Grout: Prepare in accordance with manufacturer's printed instructions.
2. Grout: Clean areas to be grouted free of oil, grease, laitance, dirt, and other contaminants. Remove loose material. Metal components in contact with grout shall be free of rust, paint, and oil.
3.2 Mixing
A. Equipment: The Contractor shall use power operated mechanical mortar mixer.
B. Time:
1. Non-Shrink Grout: The Contractor shall follow all times in accordance with manufacturer's printed instructions.
3.3 Placing
A. Non-Shrink Non-Metallic Grout: The Contractor shall perform grout placement in accordance with the recommendations of ACI and the manufacturer's published specifications for mixing and placing. Place non-shrink non-metallic grout only where indicated on Contract Drawings.
B. Grout- The Contractor shall place grout as follows:
1. Following surface preparation, saturate the concrete with water; then remove excess water and brush on a coat of neat cement. Place grout while neat cement is wet.
2. Place in a single pour. Straight-edge exposed grout surfaces for trueness, consolidate and finish with a steel trowel.
3. Cure and seal in accordance with ACI 308.
