About this file

This is a specification document for rough grading work prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the Skytop Lodge Sewage Treatment Plant Improvements Project (Project Number 005153.0436) in Pennsylvania. The specification outlines the excavation, grading, filling, and compacting requirements for site preparation in support of sewage treatment plant upgrades. Work includes excavating topsoil and subsoil, cutting and grading site structures and building pads, and rough contouring to specified elevations. The specification requires topsoil excavation from areas designated for further improvement with stockpiling to a maximum depth of 35 feet on impervious material, subsoil excavation with removal of organics and soft materials, and filling in continuous layers with maximum 8-inch compacted depths using specified materials including subsoil fill, structural fill (PennDOT 2A), and granular fill (AASHTO No. 57). Grade slopes must slope away from buildings at minimum 2 percent for at least 10 feet. Site conditions must be verified against survey benchmarks and intended elevations prior to work commencement.

Field quality control requires laboratory material testing per ASTM D1557 and in-place compaction testing using ASTM D2922 and ASTM D3017 at a frequency of one test per 500 square yards per layer. Topsoil surface tolerances are plus or minus 0.1 foot from required elevation. The contractor must call Pennsylvania One Call System at least three working days before performing work to locate and mark underground utilities. All damaged items indicated to remain must be repaired or replaced by the contractor. Materials must be submitted as samples in air-tight containers with manufacturer's certificates certifying that products meet or exceed specified requirements. Materials sources for imported fill must be identified in submittals.
