About this file
This is a specification document for shop-fabricated wood trusses prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the Skytop Lodge Sewage Treatment Plant Improvements Project (Contract 2026-01, Project Number 005153.0436) in Pennsylvania. The specification establishes requirements for metal-plate-connected wood trusses used in roof framing, bridging, bracing, and anchorage applications. The document mandates compliance with industry standards including TPI 1 (National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction), ASTM specifications, and APA guidelines. Key performance requirements include structural design loads with maximum vertical deflection of 1/240 of span for roof trusses, fabrication within manufacturing tolerances established by TPI 1, and installation by qualified fabricators participating in recognized quality-assurance programs with third-party inspection. Dimension lumber must comply with DOC PS 20 standards with minimum chord sizes of 2 by 6 inches nominal and maximum moisture content of 19 percent at time of dressing. Metal connector plates must be obtained from a single manufacturer—specifically Alpine Engineered Products, Inc., MiTek Industries, Inc., or approved equivalent—and fabricated to TPI 1 specifications using hot-dip galvanized-steel sheet per ASTM A 653/A 653M with G60 coating designation and minimum thickness of 0.036 inch.
The specification requires submission of detailed shop drawings showing truss location, pitch, span, camber, configuration, spacing, lumber specifications, permanent bracing locations, and metal connector plate details, along with delegated-design submittals signed and sealed by qualified professional engineers. Trusses must be stored flat off the ground, protected from weather with waterproof sheeting, and handled according to TPI BCSI guidelines. Installation requires trusses to be placed plumb, square, and true to line with permanent bracing installed during erection before construction loads are applied; field alterations such as cutting, drilling, notching, or removing truss members are prohibited. Damaged galvanized coatings on exposed surfaces must be repaired with galvanized repair paint complying with ASTM A 780, and wood trusses exposed to moisture despite protection must receive EPA-registered borate treatment. The pre-bid conference is scheduled for August 25, 2026 at 10:30 AM at Skytop Lodge STP in Canadensis, Pennsylvania, with bids due September 18, 2026 at 10:00 AM through PennBid; bid security of at least 10 percent in the form of a certified check or bid bond is required.
