F. Reservoir
1. The reservoir must be able to provide a 45 minute discharge of the combined hangar sprinkler and foam system while the altitude valve is simultaneously filling the tank from the domestic water supply based on the Contractor performed hydrant flow test while also flowing 500 gpm from the nearest hydrant.
2. The Fire Protection Engineer shall calculate the required water storage tank levels as follows:
a. Determine fire suppression demand for 45 minutes duration.
b. Determine tank empty level: The tank empty level shall be calculated as the minimum available level with positive suction pressure at the fire pump after a full tank discharge with a discharge rate of 150% of the fire pump rated capacity.
c. Determine the available simultaneous refill capacity based on the water supply piping, backflow preventer and altitude valve provided, with the nearest hydrant flowing 500 gpm. Maintain minimum 25 psi in the domestic water system for this calculation. Target simultaneous fill rate is 1000 gpm. Do not exceed 1400 gpm simultaneous fill.
d. Determine net usable tank capacity in accordance with UFC 4-211-01 based on 1.2 times the fire suppression system demand flow rate less the simultaneous fill for the 45 minutes duration.
e. Tank low level alarm shall occur when the tank falls 1" (or more) below the level of the tank empty level plus the net usable capacity (the tank full level).
f. Altitude valve shall open when the level drops to the tank full level, before the tank low level arlarm is activated.
g. Altitude shall close as quickly as possible after the level reaches 12" above the tank full level. A typical altitude valve requires approximately 18" between open and close setpoints.
h. Tank overflow level is set at 1" (or more) above altitude close level.
i. Allow 6" or greater air gap above tank overflow inlet to discharge of tank fill piping.
j. Allow 10" or greater above tank fill piping discharge for fill piping elbow and clearance.
3. Tank shall have a storage capacity of a minimum 60,000 gallons net usable capacity, while simultaneously refilling the tank at 1000 gpm. Increase capacity accordingly if hangar fire protection system flow rate exceeds 1970 gpm.
4. The reservoir shall have such standard shell height and such diameter as will meet the requirements for the selected standard capacity and for the high-water level specified above. The reservoir may have supported cone roof, as approved. The reservoir shall be of welded or bolted construction. Calculations indicating levels shall be prepared by the Fire Protection Engineer and submitted for review.
G. Sizing of Reservoir
| 1. Section 6 of AWWA D100 or Section 4 of AWWA D103. Minimum nominal capacity of the tank shall be 66,000 gallons, with 1'0" freeboard. Minimum sidewall height shall be 20 feet, based on 24'-7" diameter tank, 1250 gpm altitude valve concurrent fill rate and 1970 gpm demand. For 1000 gpm concurrent altitude valve fill rate and 1970 gpm demand, provide 24'7" diameter tank with minimum nominal capacity of 73,000 gallons, 22' sidewall. Capacity shall not be less than 120% of the design hangar fire protection demand. Capacity shall not have less than the net usable capacity described above.
