About this file
This is a Pile Installation Inspection Final Report documenting steel pipe pile installation and monitoring work performed for the NAVFAC NOAA OMAO Ship & Support Facility Relocation project in Newport, Rhode Island.
Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) served as the Contractor's Geotechnical Consultant and observed pile installation activities between June 10, 2024 and October 10, 2024. The project involved the successful installation of eighteen 18-inch outer diameter by 0.5-inch wall thickness steel pipe piles for the trestle pier. Each pile was designed for a compression load of 300 kips with an ultimate compression capacity of 680 kips (based on a factor of safety of 2.25). All piles were driven using a BSP CG240 Hydraulic Hammer at a 2.0-foot stroke to meet a minimum drive criteria of 6 blows per inch for 6 inches, which was established through Pile Dynamic Analysis Testing performed between June 18 and July 5, 2024. Pile axial deviation was monitored during installation with a maximum allowable deviation of 1-inch over four feet per project specifications. All piles were driven to minimum tip elevations ranging between -30 and -60 feet. The report includes a summary table of driven depths, elevations, final blow counts, and individual pile logs documenting installation details for each of the 18 piles, along with numbered pile location plans showing completion status for the project areas.

Re: Pile Installation Inspection Final – Trestle Piles NAVFAC NOAA OMAO Ship & Support Facility Relocation
Newport, Rhode Island
Dear Matt, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc., (GTR) is pleased to present this report that summarizes steel Pipe‐pile installation and monitoring work performed at the above‐ referenced Project. At your request, GTR observed and documented installation activities between June 10, 2024 and October 10, 2024. GTR was on‐site to act as the Contractor’s Geotechnical Consultant as specified in the Project Specifications SECTION 31 62 16.13‐ STEEL PIPE PILES. Our scope of work included observing and documenting the Pipe‐pile installation process to ensure compliance with our proposed driving criteria. Refer to our PDA reports dated June 18, July 3, and July 8, 2024 for details on the testing.
Steel 18” O.D. x 0.5” Wall Pipe Pile Installation
Eighteen 18”x0.5” Pipe piles were successfully installed for the NAVFAC NOAA OMAO Ship & Support Trestle Pier. The piles have a design compression load of 300 kips. The ultimate compression capacity is 680 kips based on a factor of safety of 2.25. All of the piles were driven to a minimum drive criteria of 6 blows per inch for 6 inches using a BSP CG240 Hydraulic Hammer at a stroke of 2.0 feet. This drive criteria was established during Pile Dynamic Analysis Testing performed by GTR between June 18, 2024 and July, 5 2024 (see reports referenced above). In addition to the drive criteria, pile axial deviation was monitored during installation and recorded on the individual pile logs that can be found in Appendix A. A maximum angle of 1‐inch over four feet was the allowable maximum deviation per project specifications. All piles were driven to a minimum tip elevations ranging between elevations ‐30 and ‐60 feet. A summary table of driven depths, elevations, and final blow counts is attached in Table 1. A numbered pile location plan is presented in Figures 1A and 1B.
