About this file

This is a technical specification document for channel sewage grinders prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority's West Pump Station Replacement Project in Pennsylvania. The specification establishes requirements for a two-shaft channel sewage grinder system with a maximum peak instantaneous flow rate of 1,100 gallons per minute and capable of processing municipal wastewater with up to 1 percent solids. The primary manufacturer specified is Vogelsang USA (Model XRC136-560QD) with approved equal substitutions permitted. The grinder system shall be wall-mounted with a maximum operating speed of 47 RPM and equipped with monolithic cutter assemblies constructed from hardened alloy steel (60-65 Rockwell C hardness) with nitration for corrosion resistance. Installation must comply with manufacturer instructions, and the contractor must provide a manufacturer's representative on-site for a minimum of eight hours during installation, inspection, startup, and field testing, plus four additional hours for operator training. The contractor is required to furnish two complete sets of manufacturer-recommended spare parts and obtain a five-year manufacturer's warranty on the equipment.

The control system shall include a wall-mounted stainless steel NEMA Type 4x enclosure with automatic drive motor reversal protection for jamming conditions, audible and visual alarms for power failure and jamming events, and automatic motor-starter reset capability. The electrical system requires a 3-horsepower motor rated at 460 volts, three-phase, 60 hertz service with explosion-proof and immersible construction suitable for Class I, Division I, Group D service. The motor and Nord Gear parallel shaft gearbox reducer must be inverter-duty rated to accommodate potential future variable frequency drive installation. Upper and lower end bearings shall be radial spherical roller and deep groove ball types respectively, each with an L-10 life rating of 100,000 hours under continuous operation and protected by replaceable cartridge mechanical seals rated at 90 psi continuous duty. The specification requires field quality control testing under both utility and emergency power, proper alignment verification, lubrication inspection, and final acceptance by both the Engineer and Owner representatives prior to equipment startup.
