About this file
This is a technical specification document for identification of process piping systems prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority's West Pump Station Replacement Project in Pennsylvania. The specification section 40 05 53 establishes requirements for pipe identification materials and installation methods, including stencils and plastic pipe markers that comply with ASME A13.1 standards. The scope covers factory-fabricated plastic pipe markers from manufacturers such as Seton Identification Products and Craftmark Pipe Markers, as well as stencil painting with semigloss enamel. Installation requirements mandate that piping identification be applied after completion of coverings and painting, with identification located no more than 20 feet apart on straight runs, adjacent to valves and tees, at structure penetrations, and at obstructions. Plastic markers must be installed with corrosion-resistant mechanical fasteners or adhesive, and underground markers must be placed 6 to 8 inches below finished grade directly above buried pipe. All materials must meet manufacturer specifications and be inspected upon delivery in original packaging, with storage in clean, dry locations protected from moisture and dust.
The specification requires manufacturer product data submissions, shop drawings indicating wording, symbols, letter sizes, and color-coding schemes, and manufacturer certificates verifying compliance with specified requirements. Contractors must convene a preinstallation meeting minimum one week prior to commencing work and submit maintenance materials including special crimpers and installation tools for owner use. Letter height requirements vary based on pipe outer diameter: 1/2-inch letters for pipes up to 2 inches OD, 1-inch letters for 2.5 to 6 inches OD, and 1.75-inch letters for pipes exceeding 6 inches OD. The specification mandates that manufacturers have a minimum of three years' documented experience in producing identification products, and all work must comply with Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority standards and applicable reference standards outlined in related project sections.
