About this file
This is a technical specification document for identification systems for utilities piping and equipment prepared for the West Pump Station Replacement Project by Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority in Pennsylvania. The specification establishes requirements for stencils and pipe markers to identify piping systems in accordance with ASME A13.1 standards. Products specified include factory-fabricated plastic pipe markers from manufacturers such as Marking Services, Inc., and plastic tape pipe markers from Kolbi Pipe Marker Co., with letter sizes ranging from 1/2 inch for pipes up to 2 inches in outside diameter to 1-3/4 inches for pipes over 6 inches in diameter. Installation requirements mandate that identification be applied after completion of coverings and painting, with piping identified with plastic tape markers or stenciled painting indicating service, flow direction, and pressure. Identification shall be located not to exceed 20 feet on straight runs, adjacent to each valve and tee, at each side of structural penetrations, and at obstructions, with underground plastic pipe markers installed 6 to 8 inches below finished grade directly above buried pipe.
The specification requires manufacturers to have minimum three years of documented experience in producing the specified products. Submittal requirements include manufacturer's catalog literature, shop drawings with wording, symbols, letter sizes and color-coding schemes, installation instructions, and manufacturer's certificates confirming compliance with specified requirements. Maintenance material submittals shall include two containers of spray-on adhesive and special crimpers or other devices required for valve tag reinstallation. Closeout submittals must include project record documents with actual locations of tagged valves and corresponding tag numbers. All identification work shall conform to ASME A13.1 color scheme standards for piping system identification.
