About this file
This is a specification document for aggregates used in exterior improvements, prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for the West Pump Station Replacement Project in Northwestern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The specification outlines requirements for coarse and fine aggregate materials necessary for the project's site improvements, including grading and base course applications. The document references Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) standards and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications for material quality and testing. Coarse aggregate materials specified include PennDOT 2A, AASHTO No. 57, AASHTO No. 8, AASHTO No. 3, and Select Granular Material (2RC), while fine aggregate materials include Type A5, Bituminous Concrete Sand Types #1 and #3, Mortar Sand, Filler Type C, and Blended Aggregate Type A7. All aggregate materials must be sourced from PennDOT-approved suppliers and furnished from a single source throughout the work to ensure consistency.
The specification requires submittal of material source documentation and manufacturer's certificates certifying compliance with specified requirements. Materials must be stockpiled on-site at locations designated by the engineer in sufficient quantities to meet project schedule demands, with different aggregate types separated to prevent mixing. Surface water must be directed away from stockpile areas to prevent erosion or material deterioration. All coarse and fine aggregate materials must meet PennDOT Bulletin 15 approval standards, and materials failing testing must be replaced and retested. Upon project completion, all stockpiles must be removed and the site restored to a clean, neat condition with grading performed to prevent standing surface water.
