About this file

This is a technical specification document for rock removal procedures related to the West Pump Station Replacement Project in Pennsylvania, managed by Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority. The specification outlines the removal of identified and discovered rock during excavation operations, including site rock and trench rock materials that exceed defined volume thresholds or cannot be removed with standard excavation equipment without drilling or blasting. The work involves mechanical excavation methods, cutting rock at excavation bottoms to form level bearing surfaces, removing shaled layers to ensure sound foundations, and completing utility trench excavation to six inches below invert elevation and 24 inches wider than pipe diameter. All excavated materials must be removed from the site, and unauthorized rock removal must be corrected in accordance with backfilling and compacting requirements. The specification requires documentation of existing building conditions near rock removal locations through survey reports and photographs prior to work commencement, with scheduling designed to avoid disruption to occupied nearby buildings. Visual inspection of foundation bearing surfaces by the Engineer and inspection agency is mandated before subsequent work installation.

The specification references industry standards including NFPA 495 Explosive Materials Code and cross-references related construction sections covering rough grading, excavation, trenching, and fill materials. Submittal procedures are required per Section 01 33 00, and field quality control provisions are established under Section 01 40 00. The specification does not contain pricing information, set-asides, incumbent details, or contract term specifics, as it functions as a technical execution standard within the broader West Pump Station Replacement Project bid package that includes three separate contracts for general construction, electrical construction, and mechanical construction, with lump sum bidding required.
