About this file
This is a specification section for rough grading work prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. for a construction project in Pennsylvania. The specification outlines the requirements for excavating subsoil, cutting, grading, filling, rough contouring, and compacting site areas for structures as part of the West Pump Station Replacement Project being bid by Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority. The work includes excavation of subsoil from areas to be regraded, placement of materials in continuous compacted layers with maximum 8-inch depths for subsoil fill, structural fill, and granular fill, maintenance of optimum moisture content, and establishment of minimum 2 percent slope grade away from buildings for a minimum distance of 10 feet. Quality control requirements mandate laboratory material testing in accordance with ASTM D1557 and in-place compaction testing at a frequency of one test per 1,000 square feet for each layer, with work that fails to meet specifications to be removed, replaced, and retested. Surface tolerances are specified at plus or minus 1/10 foot from required elevation.
The specification references Pennsylvania Department of Transportation standards and incorporates materials requirements detailed in related specification sections for topsoil, subsoil fill, structural fill consisting of PennDOT 2A aggregate, and granular fill consisting of AASHTO No. 57 aggregate. Pre-work requirements include calling Pennsylvania One Call System, Inc. at least three working days before beginning work to locate and mark underground utilities, and protection of existing utilities, plant life, landscaping features, bench marks, survey control points, structures, fences, sidewalks, paving, and curbs from damage during excavation and grading operations. The specification requires submittal of materials source information and project record documents accurately recording actual locations and elevations of utilities remaining upon project completion.
