About this file
This is a technical specification document for masonry grouting work prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc., applicable to the West Pump Station Replacement Project in Pennsylvania managed by Northwestern Chester County Municipal Authority. The specification establishes requirements for grout materials and installation procedures for both structural and non-structural masonry applications. The document references industry standards including ASTM International specifications for ready-mixed concrete, Portland cement, grout aggregates, fly ash, and testing methodologies, as well as The Masonry Society's building code requirements. Key products specified include masonry grout from approved manufacturers (Glen-Gery Corporation, Lafarge North America Inc., or Lehigh Hanson), with provisions for manufacturer substitutions. The grout specifications require a compressive strength of 2,500 psi at 28 days and a slump of 8 to 11 inches for both structural and non-structural masonry applications, with coarse grout designated for spaces with minimum 4-inch dimensions and fine grout for other spaces. Materials must comply with specified ASTM standards, including Type I Portland cement and clean, potable water.
Installation requirements mandate compliance with The Masonry Society standards, with mixing performed either through transit-mixed grout per ASTM C94 or site-mixed grout per ASTM C476. Field quality control testing includes compressive strength and slump tests conducted in accordance with ASTM standards, with a minimum testing frequency of one test per 5,000 square feet of grouted wall area and at minimum one test per building. The specification requires that all block cores containing reinforcing bars be grouted solid, and all walls containing reinforcing bars are classified as structural masonry. Cold weather work must comply with standards if ambient temperature or masonry unit temperature falls below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, while hot weather provisions apply when ambient temperature exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit or exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit with wind velocity greater than 8 mph. Materials must be delivered in original manufacturer packaging, stored in clean dry locations protected from moisture and dust, and handled according to manufacturer instructions.
