SECTION 03 20 00 - CONCRETE REINFORCING
This is a technical specification document prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc., detailing concrete reinforcement requirements for a construction project. The specification establishes standards for reinforcing bars, welded wire fabric, and reinforcement accessories used in cast-in-place concrete applications. The document references industry standards from the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Welding Society (AWS), ASTM International, and the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI). Reinforcing steel must comply with ASTM A615 with a yield strength of 60 ksi, using deformed billet bars with uncoated finish. Welded steel wire fabric must comply with ASTM A185 plain type in coiled rolls. Reinforcement fabrication shall follow CRSI 10-MSP standards, including specified offset bends at splices and engineer-approved splice locations at points of minimum stress. The specification provides detailed minimum concrete cover requirements varying by application, ranging from 1/2 inch for shell and folded plate members with smaller bars to 3 inches for footings and concrete formed against earth. Tie wire must be minimum 16 gage annealed type, and chairs, bolsters, and spacers must include load-bearing pads to prevent vapor retarder puncture.
Installation requirements mandate that reinforcement be placed, supported, and secured against displacement with specific spacing according to ACI 318 standards. Bars in multiple layers must be placed directly above lower bars, and field quality control shall comply with Section 01 40 00 quality requirements. Shop drawings must indicate bar sizes, spacings, locations, splice locations, quantities, bending and cutting schedules, and supporting and spacing devices. Special plastic-coated steel supports are required for reinforcement adjacent to weather-exposed concrete surfaces. The specification prohibits welding of crossing reinforcement bars for assembly except as permitted by the Engineer and requires accommodation for formed openings without displacement or damage to vapor retarders.
