About this file
This is a technical specification document for execution requirements prepared by Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc., applicable to construction projects managed under standard contract documents. The specification establishes mandatory procedures for field engineering, examination, preparation, and execution of work, requiring employment of a registered Pennsylvania land surveyor to establish locations, elevations, lines, and levels using recognized engineering survey practices. Contractors must verify existing site conditions, dimensions, and utility locations before commencing work, with failure to inspect and report constituting acceptance of field conditions. The document mandates that all work be located accurately in correct alignment and elevation, with vertical work plumb and horizontal work level, and requires compliance with manufacturer's installation instructions performed in sequence. Contractors must maintain minimum 8-foot headroom clearance in spaces without suspended ceilings, secure all products with positive anchorage devices, and allow for material expansion and building movement. The specification requires daily progress cleaning of the project site and work areas in compliance with NFPA 241 standards, with combustible waste materials removed within 7 days during normal weather or 3 days when temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and prohibits burying, burning, or washing waste materials into sewers or waterways.
The document emphasizes contractor responsibility for protecting installed construction throughout the construction period, including providing temporary and removable protection for installed products and durable sheet materials to protect finished floors and surfaces from traffic and damage. Contractors must repair or remove and replace defective construction, restore damaged substrates and finishes, and remove and replace any chipped, scratched, or broken glass or reflective surfaces. The specification requires contractors to maintain one set of manufacturer's installation instructions at the project site during installation and until construction completion, and to adjust and lubricate all operable components to ensure smooth operation. No pricing, funding sources, set-asides, or incumbent contractor information is specified in this execution requirements document, as it functions as a standard technical specification applicable across multiple projects rather than addressing contract-specific procurement details.

C. Examine and verify specific space and conditions described in individual Specification Sections.
D. Verify that utility services are available with correct characteristics and in correct locations.
E. Failure to inspect, verify and report shall constitute an acceptance of the field condition, or other work, as fit and proper for the reception of his work.
F. Promptly report to the Engineer any defects in such work that render it unsuitable for such proper execution and results; written report shall include:
1. Description of the Work.
2. List of detrimental conditions, including substrates.
3. List of unacceptable installation tolerances.
4. Recommended corrections.
5. Verify compatibility with and suitability of substrates.
6. Examine roughing-in systems to verify actual locations of connections before equipment and fixture installation.
7. Examine walls, floors, and roofs for suitable conditions where products and systems are to be installed.
8. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. Proceeding with the Work indicates acceptance of surfaces and conditions.
Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. 01 73 00 - 3 009280.0426
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Clean substrate surfaces prior to applying next material or substance according to manufacturer's instructions.
B. Seal cracks or openings of substrate prior to applying next material or substance.
C. Apply manufacturer-required or -recommended substrate primer, sealer, or conditioner prior to applying new material or substance in contact or bond.
3.3 EXECUTION
A. Locate the Work and components of the Work accurately, in correct alignment and elevation, as indicated.
1. Make vertical work plumb and make horizontal work level.
2. Where space is limited, install components to maximize space available for maintenance and ease of removal for replacement.
3. Conceal pipes, ducts, and wiring in finished areas, unless otherwise indicated.
4. Maintain minimum headroom clearance of 8 feet in spaces without a suspended ceiling.
B. Comply with manufacturer's installation instructions, performing each step in sequence.
Maintain one set of manufacturer's installation instructions at Project Site during installation and until completion of construction.
C. When manufacturer's installation instructions conflict with Contract Documents, request clarification from Engineer before proceeding.
D. Verify that field measurements are as indicated on approved Shop Drawings or as instructed by manufacturer.
E. Secure products in place with positive anchorage devices designed and sized to withstand stresses, vibration, physical distortion, or disfigurement.
1. Secure Work true to line and level and within specified tolerances, or if not specified, industry-recognized tolerances.
2. Physically separate products in place, provide electrical insulation, or provide protective coatings to prevent galvanic action or corrosion between dissimilar metals.
3. Exposed Joints: Provide uniform joint width and arrange to obtain best visual effect. Refer questionable visual-effect choices to Architect/Engineer for final decision.
F. Allow for expansion of materials and building movement.
Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. 01 73 00 - 4 009280.0426
G. Joints: Make joints of uniform width. Where joint locations in exposed work are not indicated, arrange joints for the best visual effect. Fit exposed connections together to form hairline joints.
