About this file
This is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) document for overhauling a watertight hatch (1-440-2) on the USS RALPH JOHNSON (DDG-114). The work involves removing and reinstalling the hatch panel, replacing gaskets and label plates, performing surface preparation and painting, and conducting operational and leak tests. The scope includes working on a 30-inch x 30-inch raised low profile quick-acting hatch with 6 dogs and spring balance, located on the Main Deck Weather at Frame 440, Port side.
The document specifies detailed procedures including drilling access holes, disassembling dog assemblies, near-white blast cleaning, installing new gaskets conforming to A-A-59588 Class 3B Grade 30, and conducting chalk tests and air hose tests to verify proper sealing. The work period is scheduled from July 14, 2025, to November 26, 2025. The TGI includes a material list with specific hardware requirements and notes potential asbestos hazards. The work affects a fire zone boundary and requires fabrication of a non-flammable closure. The total estimated man-hours are 217 with a material cost of $3,278.15, managed under Job Order 38K5216703.
