About this file

This is a Concrete Reinforcement specification document for the Route 54 Sanitary Sewer Extension Project (Contract No. WB-1) under the West Branch Regional Authority in Pennsylvania. The specification details materials and installation requirements for reinforcing steel bars, welded steel wire fabric, support chairs, bolsters, bar supports, and spacers for cast-in-place concrete. Key material specifications include ASTM A615 60 ksi yield grade billet-steel deformed bars in uncoated finish, ASTM A185 plain type welded steel wire fabric in galvanized finish, and ASTM A82 stirrup steel. The specification requires compliance with industry standards including ACI 315, ACI 318, AWS D1.4, and CRSI Manual of Standard Practice. Contractors must submit shop drawings indicating reinforcement sizes, spacings, locations, quantities, bending schedules, splicing details, and supporting devices, along with mill test certificates for all supplied reinforcing materials. Installation requirements mandate cleaning of reinforcement before concrete placement, proper support and security against displacement, maintenance of specified concrete coverage clearances, and directional wire ties into concrete rather than toward surfaces.

The specification addresses critical installation and splicing procedures, including lap splices in accordance with ACI 318 Class B unless otherwise shown on drawings, weld splices conforming to AWS D1.4 for bars #14 and larger, and welded wire fabric lapped minimum twelve inches plus end-extension. The grouting of reinforcing bars is detailed with specific requirements for hole drilling at one-quarter inch larger than rebar diameter, minimum embedment depth of fifteen times rebar diameter, white-metal finish cleaning, and use of Sika Sikadur 32 Hi-Mod epoxy grout with minimum ambient temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit. No rebar-flange couplers or similar devices are permitted without prior written Engineer approval. The specification prohibits heat treatment, rebending, or straightening of reinforcing bars except as specifically approved by the Engineer.

West Branch Regional Authority 03200-3 January 2026

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

A. Before placing concrete, clean reinforcement of foreign particles or coatings.

B. Place, support, and secure reinforcement against displacement. Do not deviate from alignment or measurement.

3.03 GROUTING REINFORCING BARS

A. Drill hole to one-quarter (1/4) inch larger than the rebar diameter.

B. Use carbide tip bit or star bit. Core drilling is not acceptable unless sides of hole are sandblasted after drilling is complete.

C. Depth of Embedment: Minimum fifteen (15) times rebar diameter.

D. Use compressed air to clean holes of drilling residue.

E. Thoroughly wet all surfaces of the hole with water. Remove any standing water.

West Branch Regional Authority 03200-4 January 2026

F. Clean rebar to white-metal finish.

G. Use Sika Sikadur 32 Hi-Mod epoxy grout, in accordance with the grout manufacturer's instructions to secure rebar in hole.

H. Do not grout rebar when ambient temperature is less than 40°F.

I. Cure grout in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
