About this file
This is a specification document for truck load covers issued by MaineDOT. The document outlines detailed requirements for roll-up type truck load covers designed to accommodate hot asphalt temperatures and compatible with existing MaineDOT load cover systems. The covers must be constructed of RFL-treated latex-coated woven polyester yarn fabric capable of withstanding temperatures of 350 degrees and must include an aluminum windscreen, electric motor-driven mechanism, and mounting capability to the truck body headboard. The specification requires a Donovan Bullet model #2858 electric direct drive motor or approved equivalent, with a three-year warranty on the motor. Cover arms must be anodized aluminum with adjustable length, and a control switch must be integrated into the truck dashboard with clear labeling.
The specification includes additional operational and performance requirements to ensure safety and functionality across MaineDOT's fleet. For vehicles with 54,000 or larger capacity, covers must accommodate both the body load and, in winter conditions, a hopper sander and load. Cover arms must be engineered to remain below the vehicle body sides when retracted, and extra spring tension must be provided to prevent the cover from shifting during transit. The specification includes a manufacturer responsibility clause stipulating that if any load cover sailing issues occur after installation and delivery to Fleet Services, the cover manufacturer must correct the deficiency at no cost.
