About this file
This is a specification document for truck load covers required by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). The document outlines technical requirements for load covers designed to protect truck beds carrying materials such as hot asphalt during transport. The specification details three primary categories of requirements: fabric composition and thermal resistance, cover mechanism and motor specifications, and general assembly and operational characteristics. The covers must be constructed of RFL (Resorcinol Formaldehyde Latex) coated woven polyester yarn fabric capable of withstanding temperatures of 350 degrees Fahrenheit and must be compatible with existing MaineDOT load cover systems. The covers are required to feature electric roll-up mechanisms with Donovan Bullet model #2858 motors or approved equivalents, aluminum windscreens, and dash-integrated control switches with three-year warranties on motors.
The specification emphasizes operational performance and durability requirements for vehicles of 54,000 pounds or larger, which must accommodate both standard loads and hopper sanders with loads during winter operations. Cover arms must be constructed of anodized aluminum with adjustable lengths and enhanced spring tension to prevent cover movement during vehicle operation. The specification mandates that any cover sailing or operational defects occurring after installation and delivery to Fleet Services must be corrected at no cost by the cover manufacturer, establishing a performance guarantee and liability framework for the supplier.
