SubTask 1 – Coral Relocation and Monitoring Plan Description:
SubTask 1 - Coral Relocation and Monitoring Plan: A Cummins Cederberg marine biologist with experience in developing and implementing coral relocation, mitigation and monitoring plans will develop a new coral relocation and monitoring plan for the Indian Key
Dock rehabilitation program. Based on a November 2022 conditions assessment of the Indian
Key dock piles, in-water work consists of the replacement of twenty-two (22) of the twenty-nine (29) dock piles. The remaining seven (7) piles are in good condition and do not need to be repaired or replaced.
In March 2022, a coral relocation and mitigation plan was developed as part of the process to rehabilitate the docks. However, the plan assumed all the piles would be replaced and all viable corals and octocorals colonizing the piles and hard substrate within an approximate 3
ft. buffer surrounding the piles would need to be relocated. The total surface area of impacted coral colonies was also quantified based on this same assumption.
To estimate the number of coral colonies to be relocated, Cummins Cederberg will use the existing field survey data from April and September 2021, assuming the number and sizes of the hard coral and octocoral colonies has not significantly changed. Cummins Cederberg will coordinate with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) and follow the new
2022 Resource Assessment Survey Protocols for Nearshore Construction Projects to ensure the revised plan follows the most current guidelines. Recommendations within the plan will similarly follow those specified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
(FWC) with regards to the species and size ranges prioritized for relocation within the State of Florida. With the new information from the conditions assessment report, a revised coral relocation and monitoring plan will be developed that will identify the quantity and surface area of coral colonies impacted by the replacement of twenty-two (22) dock piles and the replacement of the over-water decking.
Deliverables:
Task 1: Revised Coral Relocation and Monitoring Plan (pdf, electronic delivery)
Performance Measure: Deliverables will be reviewed by the Department to confirm they are complete, accurate, and timely.
