About this file
This document is a section from the specifications for the Thermal Insulation requirements of the HAVO 305150 Phase II, Kilauea Visitor Center (KVC) project.
The key details are:
The insulation requirements call for fiberglass batt insulation with an integral vapor barrier on one side. Insulation must meet the specified R-values and be installed in a single layer unless multiple layers are required to achieve the R-values. The insulation must be protected from physical damage, moisture, and soiling during delivery, storage, and installation. Surface preparation and installation instructions are provided, including requirements for continuity of the vapor retarder and clearances around recessed lighting fixtures. Installed insulation must be protected from damage after installation.
This specification is part of the solicitation documents for the HAVO 305150 Phase II project, which includes the rehabilitation of the existing Kilauea Visitor Center, demolition and replacement of an existing comfort station, and expansion of the existing visitor center lanai at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The project is being procured by the National Park Service National Office.

081224 THERMAL INSULATION
SECTION 07 21 00 – THERMAL INSULATION
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUBMITTALS
A. Product data for all insulation products
1.2 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration due to moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for handling, storing, and protecting during installation.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
A. Insulation shall be provided to meet the requirements indicated. A single layer of insulation shall be used unless attaining the R-Values indicated cannot be accomplished with a single layer of insulation.
B. Fiberglass batts, with integral vapor barrier one side.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Clean substrates of substances that are harmful to insulation, including removing projections capable of puncturing insulation or vapor retarders, or that interfere with insulation attachment.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. General
1. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions applicable to products and applications.
2. Install insulation that is undamaged, dry, and unsoiled and that has not been left exposed to ice, rain, or snow at any time.
3. Install insulation with manufacturer's R-value label exposed after insulation is installed.
4. Extend insulation to envelop entire area to be insulated. Fit tightly around obstructions and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections that interfere with placement.

B. Insulation in Framed Construction
1. Blanket Insulation: Install in cavities formed by framing members according to the following requirements:
a. Use insulation widths and lengths that fill the cavities formed by framing members.
If more than one length is required to fill the cavities, provide lengths that will produce a snug fit between ends.
b. Place insulation in cavities formed by framing members to produce a friction fit between edges of insulation and adjoining framing members.
c. Maintain 3-inch clearance of insulation around recessed lighting fixtures not rated for or protected from contact with insulation.
d. For wood-framed construction, install blankets according to ASTM C1320 and as follows:
e. With faced blankets having stapling flanges, lap blanket flange over flange of adjacent blanket to maintain continuity of vapor retarder once finish material is installed over it.
f. Vapor-Retarder-Faced Blankets: Tape joints and ruptures in vapor-retarder facings, and seal each continuous area of insulation to ensure airtight installation.
3.3 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed insulation from damage due to harmful weather exposures, physical abuse, and other causes.
B. Provide temporary coverings or enclosures where insulation is subject to abuse and cannot be concealed and protected by permanent construction immediately after installation.
