7-Aug-14 1 In Technical Specification division 16130, it is stated to use rigid non-metallic conduits as raceways. However, submittal had been sent on
Dec 17, 2013 (Submittal No TO-8-00009) about raceways with both rigid and flexible non-metallic conduits. The submittal includes product data of the flexible conduits specifying the use of these conduits in plastered walls and ceilings. TT evaluation was given as 'A' (please refer to attached submittal). We reguest your approval to use flexible non-metallic conduits where applicable. Please note that NEMA permits the use o flexible conduits (please refer to attached manual extracts from NEMA)
TO-8-00009 refered "previous approval" from submittal TO-5-00003, submittal TO-5-00003 refered "previous approval" from Transmittal-
00034 of TO-3.
Transmittal-00034 was submitted to TO-3 sites and in TO-3 sites the conduits installed are only RNC types. There is no LFNC flexible conduit used in the sites.
The proposal is unacceptable as the LFNC conduits are not mechanical resistant as that of RNCs, hence please use as per the specification and as installed in TO-3.
As per our QA electrical report RNC types are installed for all TO#8 sites.

2.4.1.1.2 LFNC
NEC
Section 356.10 specifies the permitted uses of LFNC as follows:
LFNC shall be permitted to be used in exposed or concealed locations for the following purposes:
Note: Extreme cold may cause some types of nonmetallic conduits to become brittle and therefore more susceptible to damage from physical contact.
1) Where flexibility is required for installation, operation, or maintenance.
2) Where protection of the contained conductors is required from vapors, liquids, or solids.
3) For outdoor locations where listed and marked as suitable for the purpose.
4) For direct burial where listed and marked for the purpose.
5) Type LFNC-B shall be permitted to be installed in lengths longer than 1.8 m (6 ft.) where secured in accordance with 356.30.
6) Type LFNC-B as a listed manufactured prewired assembly, metric designator 16 through 27
(trade size ½ through 1) conduit.
7) For encasement in concrete where listed for direct burial and installed in compliance with 356.42.
2.4.1.2 Uses Not Permitted
2.4.1.2.1 LFMC
As with permitted uses, those uses not permitted by the NEC are not all-inclusive. The code language is intended to provide guidance on where and how LFMC may be used.
NEC
Section 350.12 specifies the uses of LFMC that are not permitted, which are as follows:
1) Where subject to physical damage.
2) Where any combination of ambient and conductor temperature produces an operating temperature in excess of that for which the material is approved.
2.4.1.2.2 LFNC
NEC
Section 356.12 specifies the uses of LFNC that are not permitted, which are as follows:
(1) Where subject to physical damage.
(2) Where any combination of ambient and conductor temperatures is in excess of that for which the
LFNC is approved.
(3) In lengths longer than 1.8 m (6 ft.), except as permitted by 356.10(5) or where a longer length is approved as essential for a required degree of flexibility.
(4) Where the operating voltage of the contained conductors is in excess of 600 volts, nominal, except as permitted in 600.32(A).
(5) In any hazardous (classified) location, except as permitted by other articles in this code.
2.4.1.3 Where Subject to Physical Damage
LFMC and LFNC must be protected from physical damage. This includes installing LFMC at heights and locations where it will not be exposed to damage. It also includes providing mechanical protection such as from nails and screws in accordance with section 300.4(D) by maintaining a 1-1/4 in (32 mm) distance from the edge of a framing member or by providing a metal plate where the distance cannot be maintained from the edge of a framing member or a furring strip.
