Domestic and Fire Protection Water Distribution Pipe Sizing Calculations

Calculations below demonstrate the min pipe size requirement for the shared domestic and fire protection water service:

Known:

Domestic Water Demand Qd 33 GPM Fire Protection Water Demand Qf 585.56 GPM @ 39.89PSI

Total Water Demand Qt 618 GPM ~ 1.37 cfs

Pipe Material PVC Pipe Material C Value 150

Pipe Length (L) 210 LF Pipe Size (D) 6 in

Residual Pressure at existing Main 58 PSI @ 1,113 GPM Static Pressure at existing Main 65 PSI @ 0 GPM

Min Pipe Size Required:

Q=V*A

Q=V*πr2 r=SQRT(Q/V π) r=SQRT(1.37cfs/7.0fps*3.14) r=0.25ft ~ 3”

Min Pipe Size 6” diameter

Pressure loss due to friction:

Ploss = 4.53*L*(Q/C)1.852 / D4.857

L eq = 210 + (2-90 bend)*8.9 + (1 tee)*18 + (3-45 bends)*5.6

=210+17.8+18+16.8 = 262.6 ft = 4.53*262.6*(655/150)1.852 / 64.857

= 3.05 PSI

Helevation = 6” elevation change from water main connection to building connection is considered negligible.

Pressure in a 6” PVC Water Service line at the new standalone MCR connection 61.95PSI @ 618 GPM;

Therefore, a 6” PVC Water and Fire Service line will sufficiently serve the MCR water demand.

MECHANICAL DESIGN - MCR

The HVAC design for the MCR utilizes a pair of downflow CRAC units, connected to a hot aisle containment system by overhead return ductwork.

The CRAC unit configuration included in the current design and calculations meet the N+1 minimum redundancy required by DCIE/OIT. Each unit is capable of handling the required cooling load on its own, with the other unit in standby or shut down.

The CRAC units can operate concurrently at reduced airflow and compressor settings for optimized energy efficiency, or can operate with fewer units at higher loading to meet the required capacity.

Staging and fail-over functionality is handled by the CRAC system integrated controls. Both CRAC units are networked together to enable this control functionality.

The CRAC units included in the design are Liebert DSE125 indoor units with nominal sensible cooling capacity of 125kW each. Heat rejection from the CRAC units is accomplished using dedicated outdoor condensing units. These systems will also include a refrigerant-side economizer for increased efficiency.

Arranged in a hot-aisle configuration, the CRAC units draw hot supply air from the containment area and flood the MCR with cooled supply air. This configuration is proposed for this project as it offers greater occupant comfort compared to a cold-aisle containment system which results in elevated temperatures throughout the rest of the room, and also may mitigate potential hot-spots that could otherwise occur due to the nature of the in-row CRAC units.

ANALYSIS CONDITIONS

CFD analysis performed using Autodesk CFD 2019 software.

The following design conditions are utilized in the CFD model for this facility:

• Exact loads for each data cabinet, and the distribution of loads within each cabinet, are unknown and may change over time. The CFD analysis utilizes the following heat loads (as specified in the

VA CFD Guidelines and ISTS v3.1) for each cabinet/equipment type:

o SD cabinets: 5.0kW each o HD cabinets: 10.0kW each o HDA cabinets: 2.8kW each o MDA cabinets: 3.5kW each o UPS units: 5kw per active section (10.0kw total)

• Based on the telecommunications documents, the total loads included in the CFD model for the

MCR include 86.6kW in data cabinets (SD, HDA, & MDA types) as well as 10kW estimated load for the UPS units for a total design heat load of 96.6kW. The actual installed kW load following

2025/11/10 Page 2 of 24 this project will be less than the calculated load in the CFD model. The ultimate data cabinet load in the MCR per the DCIE standard small data center layout is 79.6kW.

• Airflows for each cabinet/equipment type utilized are modeled as follows:

o SD cabinets: 1040 cfm each o HDA cabinets: 585 cfm each o MDA cabinets: 725 cfm each

• (2) CRAC units provide data center conditioning for the main data cabinet set in the MCR. The

CFD model reflects (1) CRAC units operating at 100% airflow (18,000 cfm), with the other unit being inactive (redundant/standby or failed).

• The UPS units are nominally 100kW rated each, with a nominal maximum heat output of 10kW.

Sample manufacturer’s data indicates that actual heat output from the UPS units will be much lower (example - 3.1kW for Schneider Galaxy VS 100kW).

DESIGN GOALS

The objectives for the MCR cooling system are to achieve the following conditions:

• Supply air temperature setpoints between 64-81°F.

• Inlet temperatures at data equipment between 72-80.6°F.

• Rack/cabinet exhaust temperatures below 106°F (with up to 108°F acceptable at 1-2 racks).

• Minimize cold and hot spots near data equipment.

• Maintain room ambient conditions below 85°F for human comfort. Note that required rack inlet temperatures are lower than this temperature (supply air temperatures between 64-81°F).

• Maintain suitable temperatures for UPS unit operation, within manufacturer typical ambient temperature range of 41-104°F.

CONCLUSIONS - MCR

1. The model demonstrates that a hot aisle configuration with CRAC units located as shown is suitable for meeting the requirements for VA data center conditioning.

2. Based on temperature data from the modeled scenarios at the maximum design cabinet loading, the ideal supply air temperature setpoint for the MCR CRAC systems is 72-78°F as demonstrated in Scenario 3.

3. As demonstrated in Scenarios 1 & 2, a setpoint below approximately 72°F will likely result in data cabinet inlet air temperatures below 72°F.

4. As demonstrated in Scenario 4, a setpoint above approximately 78°F will likely result in data cabinet inlet air temperatures above 80.6°F.

5. As demonstrated in all included scenarios, none of the modeled setpoints result in cabinet outlet air temperatures above 106°F.

6. As demonstrated in all included scenarios, none of the modeled setpoints result in ambient temperatures at the UPS unit locations outside of manufacturer’s typical temperature recommendations (41-104°F).

7. At the design data equipment load of 96.6kW (including data cabinets and UPS units), the proposed arrangement of (2) 125kW nominal capacity CRAC units appear to be capable of maintaining space conditions within VA OIT standards while meeting N+1 redundancy. Note that this calculation includes data cabinet loads per the VA CFD Manual which is higher than the VA small data center template ultimate load of 79.6kW.

8. Future data equipment changes will need to be modeled to verify load distribution and any system adjustments or upgrades that might be required.
