About this file
This is a technical specification section (33 46 13) detailing requirements for foundation drainage systems as part of a steam tunnel construction project at the Des Moines VA Medical Center. The section covers materials and procedures for constructing foundation drainage systems, including installation, backfill, and cleanout extensions that connect to storm sewers.
The specification requires perforated PE or PVC piping for drain tile installation parallel to tunnel floor slabs, with PVC SDR 26 sewer pipe for underslab conveyance. Key installation requirements include: drain tile piping must match tunnel slope with minimum 0% grade, underslab piping requires minimum 0.5% slope, cleanouts must be PVC in earth areas (not allowed in paved areas), and floor drains must be 4" cast iron with "TO STORM SEWER" permanently stamped. Materials must meet various ASTM standards, with specific requirements for pipe joints, geotextile filter fabrics, and aggregate bedding materials. The contractor must provide a one-year warranty on materials and workmanship from final acceptance.
