1. The average gradation of each sieve of 5 aggregate samples is within the specified gradation band for that sieve.
2. The number of individual aggregate samples in each lot outside the band does not exceed 2.
3. The number of individual aggregate samples are not outside the band by more than 2 percent on any one sieve.
| B. | Opening slurry seal surface to traffic does not constitute acceptance. | |
| PART 2 | PRODUCTS | |
| 2.1 | EMULSIFIED ASPHALT |
A. Use a cationic emulsified asphalt grade CQS-1H as specified in AASHTO M 208.
B. Use a polymer modified emulsion CQS-1HP, meeting CQS-1H specifications identified in AASHTO M 208 and ISSA A 105, using solid synthetic rubber or latex material.
| 1. | Combine the polymer modifier with the base asphalt or asphalt emulsion at a minimum rate of 3 percent solids by weight of asphalt, prior to loading at the manufacturing plant. |
| 2. | Use a polymer modified emulsion compatible with the mix design developed for the conventional slurry seal. |
C. Verify that the shipment is the same as the mix design.

| A. | Use a job mix or target gradation within the gradation band. Base the mix design on this gradation. The percent passing each sieve after the target gradation has been submitted will not vary by more than the stockpile tolerance and still remain within the gradation band. Refer to AASHTO T 11, AASHTO T 27, and Table 1. |

| 2.8 | EQUIPMENT | |
| A. | Use only a machine designed and manufactured specifically for blending, mixing, and placing slurry seal. | |
| 1. | Mix the material in a self-propelled, slurry seal mixing machine of either truck-mounted or continuous-run design. | |
| a) | Continuous-run machines: equipped to self-load materials while continuing to lay slurry seal. | |
| b) | Either type machine: accurately deliver and proportion the aggregate, emulsified asphalt, mineral filler, control setting additive, and water to a revolving mixer and to discharge the mixed product on a continuous-flow basis. | |
| 2. | Maintain sufficient storage capacity within the machine for aggregate, emulsified asphalt, mineral filler, control additive and water to maintain an adequate supply to the proportioning controls. | |
| B. | Calibrate each mixing unit in the presence of the Engineer before a machine is used on a project. | |
| C. | Provide a lateral control device and a flexible strike-off capable of being adjusted to lay the slurry at the mix design rate of application. | |
| PART 3 | EXECUTION | |
| 3.1 | STOCKPILE | |
| A. | Construct individual 500-ton stockpiles of slurry seal aggregates. | |
| 1. | COR approves stockpiles a minimum of one and a maximum of seven days prior to use. | |
| B. | Notify the COR a minimum of seven calendar days prior to slurry seal placement in order for the initial stockpiles samples and tests to be reviewed for acceptance. | |
| C. | Obtain the COR’s written acceptance of all stockpiles prior to use in slurry seal. | |
| D. | Remove material not meeting specifications from the stockpile area. | |
| E. | Retest corrected material for acceptance. | |
| 3.2 | PREPARATION |
A. Repair any holes, raveled areas, or low areas by tacking and filling with asphalt concrete.
B. Seal all cracks with cutback asphalt. Allow crack seal to dry before surfacing.
C. Protect manholes, valve boxes, drop inlets and other service utility entrances prior to surfacing.
D. Clean the surface of all dirt, sand, dust, oil, and other objectionable material immediately prior to applying the slurry.
E. Allow cracks to dry thoroughly before applying slurry seal when using water to clean the surface.
F. Build stockpiles and receive acceptance of aggregate from the COR prior to starting slurry work.
G. Tack coat high-absorbent asphalt surfaces and polished and slick surfaces.
3.3 TRAFFIC CONTROL
A. Follow Section 01 55 26 requirements.
B. Direct traffic through work with traffic control devices to provide worker and public safety.
C. The length of time before traffic is permitted to use the surface depends on the type of slurry seal mix characteristics and weather conditions.
3.4 APPLICATION
A. Pre-wet the entire surface by fogging ahead of the slurry box. Do not over apply, causing free water to sit on the pavement in front of the slurry box.
B. Carry a sufficient amount of slurry in all parts of the spreader at all times so that full width and complete coverage is obtained with no streaks or narrow spots. Avoid overloading the spreader.
C. Apply slurry mixture of proper consistency at an average rate of 18 to 22 lb/yd2.
D. Do not add additional water for any reason, once the mixture has been placed onto the road surface.
| E. | Remove and replace the slurry if any of the following occurs: |
| 1. | Lumping, balling, or unmixed aggregates. |
| 2. | Separation of the coarse aggregate from the emulsion and fines. |
| 3. | Settling of the coarse aggregate to the bottom of the mix. |
| 4. | Excessive breaking of emulsion inside the spreader box. |
| 5. | Streaking caused by oversized aggregate. |
| F. | Use hand squeegees to spread slurry in areas that cannot be reached with slurry seal machine. |
| 1. | Lightly dampen areas prior to mix placement. |
| 2. | Provide complete and uniform coverage. |
| 3. | Avoid unsightly appearance from hand work. |
| 4. | Use the same type of finish in hand worked areas as applied by the spreader box. |
| G. | Correct any joints or cracks that are not filled by the slurry mixture. |
H. Place slurry seal adjacent to concrete pavements or concrete curb and gutter with a straight longitudinal edge. Do not allow over-lap on these areas.
I. Maintain straight lines at all locations.
3.5 JOINTS
A. Do not permit build-up on longitudinal or transverse joints.
B. Smooth thick spots before the emulsion breaks to a uniform surface with no breaks or discontinuities is obtained.
C. Use construction paper or comparable products so all beginning and ending joint lines from each construction pass are straight.
3.6 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. The slurry, when cured, shall present a uniform, skid-resistant appearance where all cracks are filled.
B. Leave no streaks caused by oversized aggregate particles or buildup of slurry mix on squeegees.
C. Leave no holes, bare spots, or cracks through which liquids or foreign matter could penetrate to the underlying pavement.
3.7 PROTECTION AND REPAIR
A. Protect all structures, including curb and gutter, sidewalk, guardrails and guideposts from being spattered or marred. If any spattering, over-coating, or marring occurs, correct at no additional cost to GOVERNMENT.
B. Insure straight lines along lips of gutters and shoulders. No runoff on these areas will be permitted. Lines at intersections will be kept straight to provide good appearance.
C. Repair any damage caused by construction.
