About this file
This is a compilation of EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) test procedure guides for Goddard Space Flight Center, containing detailed setup and testing instructions for multiple EMI tests including RS103 (Radiated Susceptibility), CS116 (Conducted Susceptibility Impulse Excitation), CS101 (Conducted Susceptibility Audio Frequency), CE101/CE03/CMCE (Conducted Emissions), and RE102 (Radiated Emissions).
The guides provide comprehensive equipment lists, test setup diagrams, step-by-step procedures, and software configuration instructions for EMC32 test software. Key equipment includes signal generators, oscilloscopes, RF amplifiers, power meters, field probes, various antennas, current probes, and specialized test fixtures. The procedures detail both real-time monitoring methods and pre-calibration methods, with specific instructions for equipment setup, system integrity checks, and data collection. The document emphasizes that while it serves as a setup guide, the official EMI test procedures remain the governing documents. Each section includes detailed diagrams showing equipment connections, screenshots of software configuration settings, and verification steps to ensure proper test execution.

Test Method 1, Real time RF field monitoring
This method is generally the preferred method at GSFC, it differs from the pre-calibration method which is covered in a different document. This method requires no pre-calibration runs.
It relies on a control loop based on the output of RF field probe(s) placed near the DUT. Real time amplifier power output monitoring is employed in the software to protect the amplifiers, antennas and the DUT from damage or spurious signals. When practical, a scope is used to monitor the amplifier signal for proper modulation and cleanliness. There are several setup scenarios based on the room and the frequency range(s) tested. Generally, test setup should go as follows:
Establish GPIB and/or ethernet communications with all involved test equipment. Verify using NIMax.
Run Tile! and input frequency, level and power information.
Set up field probe, then clean and attach fiber optic cable.
Establish communications between the EMCenter monitor and the Field Probe.
Set up frequency appropriate directional coupler and attach power meter head to the forward port. Attach 50 ohm terminator to the reverse port.
Check all rf cables and blow out connectors using canned air (if not in clean room).
Attach and torque all rf cables.
With the amplifier off , run the tile! test briefly to insure all equipment is operating properly.
Verify probe and antenna placement with project before taking setup pictures.

TEST SETUP
This test setup covers the initial layout of equipment as well as the steps for programming RE102 scans in EMC32. Use the following steps as a reference while setting up and running Radiated Emissions testing.
1.) Insert the EMC32 Emissions key in the computer. This will ensure real emissions data is collected and stored, rather than generalized preliminary scans. Launch EMC32 and begin programming for RE102 based on procedure specifications provided by the project.
2.) Create the EUT information file that will display project and subproject information on each test scan.
Doc.
xxxx-xx-xxxx-xxxx
3.) Create a Limit Line file for the full range of frequencies being tested. Unless there are gaps in the test ranges, one Limit Line is all that is needed.
4.) Create a Test Template for each antenna range and each individual testing notch. Be sure to select the proper Hardware Setup based on the equipment you will be using, the Limit Line created earlier, and the project EUT Information file. Select “Standard EMI Report” as the generation template for exported test runs. Reports should be saved in EMC32 as individual test runs and exported in Word and PDF files.
5.) For each Test Template, review the test procedure to determine which subranges are required for each antenna range. Add each of those frequency subranges into the generated Test Template, and select the appropriate resolution bandwidth, scan type, duration, and input port. All Radiated Emissions are performed using port number one.
Doc.

8.) Once all System Integrity Checks are complete, set up the first antenna needed.
Remove all unnecessary items from the test chamber, seal all unused passthrough ports, and close the doors. Open the relevant Test Template and begin the scan. Save test runs using the format: Test No. xxx RE102 START FREQUENCY to STOP FREQUENCY.
Select the button to generate the Test Report. When prompted, fill out all information in the generated sheet. Hit the save button to sync the generated report with the test file in EMC32. Export the report to Windows, and provide digital/printed copies to the project as needed.

Test Method 1, Real time Voltage and Current Monitoring
This method has become the preferred method at GSFC, it differs from the Mil-Std-461G method which is a pre-cal method and covered in a different document. This method requires no pre-calibration runs. Prior to hooking up to DUT, a test into a resistor attached to the Solar transformer should be run to verify active voltage and current limiting. Typically, a > 1 ohm resistor should result in voltage limiting and 0 ohms should result in current limiting.

TEST SETUP
Test Method 1, Real time Voltage and Current Monitoring
WARNING: Never allow DUT to be powered up unless the amplifier is attached to the transformer and is turned on.
OR
The Solar 2.4 ohm resistive load is attached to the transformer primary.
Catastrophic damage to hardware could occur!
Set up test according to the diagram.
For safety, use an isolation transformer for all EMI test equipment.
Since you will be close to the DUT, an acceptable ESD cart and procedures should be followed.
Connect and establish communications between the test computer and the scope, signal generator via GPIB or ethernet. (Setting up and using Tile! to run the test is outside the scope of this document.)
Set up scope according to diagram.
Check that Solar Amplifier is turned on. Gain should generally be around 12 o’clock
(halfway up). Gain can be left at minimum until test time but keep in mind the possibility of a noisy gain pot.
After careful review of setup, project may power up.
Upon starting test, scope will auto-scale to the changing voltage/current conditions.
