About this file
This is a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Procedures and Guidelines document establishing contamination control protocols for Code 549 Environmental Test Engineering and Integration Branch. The directive (549-PG-8700.0.1D) details requirements for cleanroom operations, training, certification, and monitoring.
The document outlines specific processes for contamination control services including equipment cleaning, precision cleaning, facility cleaning, and certification. Personnel must complete SATERN training (Course GSFC-004-06) with a minimum 70% score before entering cleanrooms. Code 549 manages cleanroom garments and consumables, provides chemical analysis services, and certifies cleanrooms according to IEST ISO 14644-1 standards. The Chemical Analysis Laboratory screens cleanroom materials for harmful substances like silicones. Records retention requirements are specified for training records (5 years after employee separation) and various test/certification data (10 years). The directive is effective September 18, 2020 through September 18, 2025.

PROCEDURES
1 Contamination Control Cleanroom Access Training Program
Unless otherwise required by the facility owners, cleanroom access training is required for personnel entering the cleanrooms and cleantents. (Any reference to cleanrooms throughout this document, also implies cleantents and clean benches) However, Code 549 or their designees can escort untrained personnel into a cleanroom when authorized by the project.
If a sign-in log is provided, the authorized escort should write their control number (located on the back of the Cleanroom Access Training Card) on the sign in log in the Escort Control No. column next to the visitor's name and escort the visitor into the cleanroom.

2 Work Flow
2.1 Contamination Control Customer Requests and Implementation
The customer requesting contamination control services from Code 549 CC should complete a work request. Services included, but are not limited to: general equipment cleaning, precision cleaning, facility cleaning, facility certification, tape lift, etc. Special instructions or reference to a project’s Contamination Control Plan and/or to a project’s Work Order Authorization can be included on this document. If no special instructions are included standard clean practices will be used.
2.2 Chemical Analysis Laboratory Request and Implementation
When Code 549 CC receives a request for quantitative and/or qualitative chemical analysis, customers should provide detailed information on the service requested. When the analysis is completed, the laboratory manager communicates the end product results to the customer by email, by written report or verbally. Examples of chemical analysis requests may include:
witness plate or witness foil rinse analysis, flight hardware rinse, swab or wipe analysis, associated materials screening analysis, etc.
The Chemical Analysis Laboratory screens all cleanroom consumables per lot number and a representative amount of cleanroom garments for chemical species like silicones, which are deemed harmful to critical flight hardware and/or ground support equipment.
3 Cleanroom Garments and Consumables
Code 549 provides screened cleanroom garments and consumables to clean facilities, clean benches or clean areas throughout GSFC per customer request. Unless specified by the customer, the cleanroom garments and consumables shall be stocked, tested, stored, controlled and delivered to each cleanroom by Code 549 or their designated representative.
4 Certification and Monitoring
Cleanrooms, cleanbenches and clean areas throughout GSFC can be certified under the guidance of IEST ISO 14644-1 and the Code 549 Certification and Monitoring of Cleanrooms Manual. Code 549 will supply the necessary equipment, i.e. calibrated air particle counter and/or air velocity meter, to perform certification. Certification is performed routinely, and can also be performed per the customer’s request.
The air particle counts for cleanrooms, cleanbenches and clean areas throughout GSFC can be measured under the guidance of Code 549 Certification and Monitoring of Cleanrooms Manual, by Code 549, or their designated representatives. Code 549 will supply the necessary equipment, i.e.
calibrated air particle counter and/or air velocity meter, to take measurements. These evaluations can be performed routinely or per the customer’s request.
