About this file
This is a technical specification section (079500) for exterior expansion control systems as part of renovation work at the Armed Forces Retirement Home's Sheridan Building. The specification details requirements for exterior wall and slab expansion control systems, including roof expansion joints, floor-to-floor joints, and related components.
The document outlines specific product requirements, including Emseal DFR2 roof expansion joints with 2-hour fire rating and ±50% movement capability, WABO ECF-300 flexible bellows with metal flanges, and Emseal RJ0400 floor-to-floor joints rated for seismic movement. Technical requirements include preformed cellular foam construction with silicone sealant faces, detailed submittal requirements for shop drawings and product data, and installation procedures. The specification requires products to be obtained from a single manufacturer, with approved manufacturers including Emseal (basis of design), Construction Specialties Inc., and MM Systems Corporation. Installation requirements specify proper surface preparation, use of manufacturer-recommended adhesives, and protection of completed work during construction.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A. General: Provide expansion control systems of design, basic profile, materials, and operation indicated. Provide units with capability to accommodate variations in adjacent surfaces.
1. Furnish units in longest practicable lengths to minimize field splicing. Install with hairline mitered corners where expansion control systems change direction or abut other materials.
2. Include factory-fabricated closure materials and transition pieces, T-joints, corners, curbs, cross-connections, and other accessories as required to provide continuous expansion control systems.
2.2 EXTERIOR EXPANSION CONTROL SYSTEMS
A. Basis-of-Design Product: Emseal. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product comparable by one of the following:
1. Construction Specialties, Inc.
2. MM Systems Corporation.
B. Source Limitations: Obtain expansion control systems from single source from single manufacturer.
C. Roof Expansion Joint: Emseal DFR2
1. Design Criteria:
a. Nominal Joint Width: As indicated on Drawings.
b. Movement Capability: -50 percent/+50 percent.
c. Type of Movement: Thermal.
d. Fire-Resistance Rating: 2-Hour.
2. Type: Preformed cellular foam with sealant face.
a. Foam Material: Manufacturer's standard.
b. Sealant Face: Factory applied and cured silicone.
3. Location: As indicated on drawings.
D. Bellows with Metal Flanges: Flexible Bellows. WABO ECF-300 by Watson Bowman

Bid Addendum 2/12/25
EXPANSION CONTROL 079500 - 4
A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for storing, handling, and installing expansion control systems and materials unless more stringent requirements are indicated.
B. Foam Seals: Install with adhesive recommended by manufacturer.
1. Apply bead of silicone sealant (matching the factory applied silicone) continuous along the edges of each expansion joint.
C. Terminate exposed ends of expansion control systems with field- or factory-fabricated termination devices.
3.4 PROTECTION
A. Do not remove protective covering until finish work in adjacent areas is complete. When protective covering is removed, clean exposed metal surfaces to comply with manufacturer's written instructions.
B. Protect the installation from damage by work of other Sections. Where necessary due to heavy construction traffic, remove and properly store cover plates or seals and install temporary protection over expansion control systems. Reinstall cover plates or seals prior to Substantial Completion of the Work.
