About this file
This is a technical specification for polyethylene chemical tanks (Section 43 41 43) used in federal construction projects. The specification establishes requirements for upright, cylindrical polyethylene tanks manufactured through rotational molding for above-ground vertical installation at atmospheric pressure. Tanks must be constructed from virgin polyethylene resin—either High Density Linear Polyethylene (HDLPE) or cross-linked polyethylene (HDXLPE) with anti-oxidant LLDPE liners for sodium hypochlorite service—certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 61. Material must contain 0.25 to 0.60 percent UV stabilizer and meet specific ASTM test properties including density, tensile strength, elongation at break, environmental stress-cracking resistance, and flexural modulus. Tanks must be designed for semi-heated or outdoor environments with temperatures between 60°F and 130°F and relative humidity between 20 and 50 percent.
Two specific hypochlorite tank sizes are required: Furnace Creek (300 gallons, 3.5-foot diameter, 4.75-foot overall height) and Cow Creek (115 gallons, 2.5-foot diameter, 4-foot overall height), both with flat bottoms and domed tops. A potable water tank of 755 gallons (5.3-foot diameter, 6-foot height) is also specified. Tanks must include multiple fitting types (Integrally Molded Flanges, Bolted Flange Bulkhead Fittings, Self-Aligning Threaded Bulkhead Fittings, and Unitized Molded Outlets) with specific port configurations. Additional appurtenances include expansion joints, manways/access caps, pipe supports, hazard caution signs, tank vents with 24-mesh stainless steel screens, and optional features such as drop pipes, salt wells, and ultrasonic level sensors. Wall thickness calculations must comply with ASTM D1998 using 600 psi design hoop stress at 100°F. Manufacturers must demonstrate at least ten years of prior experience in cross-linked polyethylene tank construction and maintain nationally accepted quality standards (ISO 9001 or equivalent). Field testing requires filling tanks with water for at least 24 hours to verify integrity, and warranty coverage includes five years from start-up for defects in materials and workmanship, including shipping damage.
