About this file
This is a technical background document for structural assessment of the YON 285 Fuel Oil Comp Barge, a 165-foot vessel with a 40-foot beam and 11'-3" depth at centerline. The vessel has a pre-install displacement of 248.4 long tons and an estimated vertical center of gravity of 6.0 feet. The document provides detailed specifications of the vessel's current structural configuration, including deck plating, bulkheads, frames, and stiffeners, all fabricated from ASTM A36 steel with varying thicknesses measured through ultrasonic testing.
The structural description includes main deck plating of 15.3# thickness with 3 1/2"x3"x3/8" angle longitudinals; a longitudinal centerline bulkhead of 10.2# plate stiffened with 3 1/2"x3"x3/8" angle stringers; transverse bulkheads with 8.0mm minimum thickness stiffened with 6"x3 1/2"x3/8" angles and gussets; and typical transverse frames consisting of 9"x15# C channels. Frame spacing varies from 6'-6" to 12'-6" depending on location. The document establishes KTR's responsibilities to survey the vessel to verify structural arrangements, stiffener and frame specifications, determine if the vessel has adequate section modulus to withstand a proposed lifting plan, and determine the required number and positions of lifting straps.

Background:
This craŌ has few known exisƟng as built drawings. The parƟculars are currently as follows:
Original plate thickness was not known prior to the ship check and the following descripƟon of the structure is based on the current condiƟon of the ship. All deck plaƟng, deck longitudinal and deck transverse members are ASTM A36 steel
Bulkhead thickness were obtained by ultrasonic tesƟng. Main deck consists of 15.3# plate throughout. Main deck is sƟffened with 3 1/2”x3”x3/8” angle longitudinals. Longitudinal centerline bulkhead is fabricated with 10.2# plate and sƟffened with 3 1/2”x3”x3/8” angle stringers. The Shell consists of 15.3# plate.
Transverse bulkheads located at midship and each 28’-0” forward and aŌ of midship, based on
UT readings vary in thickness from 8.0mm (0.315”) to 9.2mm (0.360”), conservaƟvely, all transverse bulkheads were modeled using minimal thickness of 8mm (0.315”). All bulkheads are sƟffened with 6”x3 1/2”x3/8” angles with 18”x12”x15.3# plate gussets at each sƟffener top.
Typical transverse frame is verƟcal 9”x15# C channel inboard and verƟcal 9”x15# C channel outboard. VerƟcal 6”x6”x3/8” angles stanchion every 6’-6” off centerline and 3 1/2”x3”x3/8” angles braces support 9”x15# C channel below main deck sƟffeners.
Frame spacing is
FR 0-1 and 21-22: 12’ 6”
FR 1-2 and 20-21: 6’ 6”
FR 2-3 and 19-20: 7’ 6”
FR 3-19: 7’
Forward and aŌ rakes have waterƟght bulkheads sƟffened with 6”x3 1/2”x 3/8” angles with
15.3# plate gussets. Typical 6”x6”x3/8” angle longitudinal braces and centerline 10.5mm
(0.415”) thick web with 15.3# plate brackets and 4”x1/4” flat bar face plate.
Figure below provides details.
KTR responsibility:
KTR should survey the ship to verify structural arrangements and sƟffener and frame size and spacing. KTR should determine if the YON has adequate SecƟon Modulus to withstand their liŌing plan. KTR should determine the number and posiƟons of liŌing straps.
