This is a technical specification section for aerospace x-ray testing equipment installation at MCAS Cherry Point, NC, dated December 24, 2025, as part of the P-995 Composite Repair Facility project.
The contractor must furnish and install a custom-engineered aerospace x-ray testing system designed to inspect large composite rotor blades nominally 33.7 feet by 2.72 feet. The system comprises a shielded modular vault (exterior dimensions 46 feet long by 14 feet wide by 11 feet tall) with a Mark X MXR 160-HP11 x-ray source at 160 kV, a 1515DX detector with 28 FPS capability and 3.94 lp/mm limiting resolution, gantry-mounted scanning equipment with servo control, a rotation-type blade manipulator, a 2-ton internal bridge crane, teach-and-learn motion control software, and a separate control room (nominal 10 feet by 12 feet). The system must complete full blade scans within 1.5 hours and comply with 21 CFR 1020.40 and NAVSEA manual S0420-AA-RAD-010. Acceptance criteria require the equipment to operate for five consecutive eight-hour shifts without unplanned interruption and display minimum spatial resolution of 3 of 4 contrast squares and 4.0 LP/mm on the computer display using USN or USAF Computed Radiography Process Control Standards. Power requirements include 480V/3-phase/60Hz/50 Amp for vault and manipulator equipment, 208V/1-phase/60Hz/40 Amp for x-ray equipment, and 120V/15 Amp for computer hardware. The contractor must provide delegated design submittals, shop drawings, product data, design data, test reports, operation and maintenance documentation, and warranty information. Training must be provided for four x-ray operators, four maintenance personnel (mechanical and electronics/electrical), and engineers for a minimum of 2 days each at 8 hours per day. A 12-month warranty commencing at final acceptance covers all defects in materials, equipment, workmanship, and performance, including repair labor and travel expenses at no cost to the Government.
