About this file
This is a technical specification document for geotextile materials to be used in the Upper Makefield Township 2026 Road Program in Pennsylvania. The specification establishes requirements for Class 1 geotextile fabric to serve as a permeable separator between dissimilar materials such as subgrades and pavement surfaces. The geotextile must be composed of synthetic fibers (at least 85% polyolefins, polyesters, or polyamides) and meet specific physical performance criteria including grab tensile strength of 158 pounds, elongation of 20% minimum, Mullen burst rating of 189 psi, puncture resistance of 56 pounds, and trapezoidal tear strength of 6 pounds. Acceptable products include Amaco Style 2000, ProPex, or approved equivalents. The specification defines approved materials per PennDOT Publication 408 Section 212.3.e and references multiple ASTM test methods to verify material properties and performance standards.
Installation requirements mandate site preparation to remove debris and obstructions, placement of fabric in a loose and unstretched condition with minimum 300-millimeter (12-inch) overlaps at roll-ends and edges, and subbase material placement within two weeks of fabric installation to minimize exposure. The geotextile must maintain ultraviolet resistance of at least 70% after 150 hours and achieve a flow rate of 4 gallons per minute per square foot. Storage and shipping protocols require the fabric remain dry and protected from the elements, with outdoor storage elevated and covered with waterproof protection, and ultraviolet exposure not to exceed 14 days. Any damaged geotextile identified by the Engineer must be replaced immediately, and all materials must be labeled in accordance with ASTM D 4873-88 standards for identification, storage, and handling.

GEOTEXTILE
32 05 19.13-1
SECTION 32 05 19.13
GEOTEXTILE
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 SECTION DESCRIPTION
A. This work shall consist of furnishing and placing a Class 1 geotextile for use as a permeable separator to prevent inter-mixing of dissimilar material such as subgrades and surfaced or unsurfaced pavement materials as defined in PennDOT Publication 408 Section 212.3.e. The geotextile shall be designed to allow passage of water while retaining in situ-soil. This specification does not address geotextiles used for reinforcement.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS
A. Geotextile shall be composed of synthetic fibers formed into a woven fabric. Fibers used in the manufacture of the geotextile shall be composed of at least 85% weight by polyolefins, polyesters or polyamides. The geotextile shall be resistant to chemical attack, rot and mildew and shall have no tears or defects that will adversely alter its physical properties. The geotextile shall be Amaco Style 2000, ProPex® or approved equal meeting the physical requirements specified in Table 1.
B. TABLE 1: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF PAVING FABRIC
Properties Test Method American Standard
Grab Tensile ASTM D 4632 158 lb.
Grab Elongation ASTM D 4632 20%(min)
Mullen Burst ASTM D 3786 189 psi
Puncture ASTM D 4833 56 lb.
Trapezoidal Tear ASTM D 4533 6 lb.
UV Resistance ASTM D 4355 70% at 150 hr.
AOS ASTM D 4751 30 sieve
Flow Rate ASTM D 4491 4 gal./min./sq.ft.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 SHIPPING & STORAGE
A. The geotextile shall be kept dry and wrapped such that it is protected from the elements during shipping and storage. If stored outdoors, the geotextile shall be elevated and protected with a waterproof cover.
At no time shall the geotextile be exposed to ultraviolet light for a period exceeding 14 days. The geotextile rolls shall be labeled in accordance with ASTM D 4873-88, “Standard Guide for Identification, Storage and Handling of Geotextiles.”
3.02 SITE PREPARATION
A. The installation area shall be prepared by clearing all debris or obstructions that may damage the geotextile.
3.03 GEOTEXTILE PLACEMENT
A. Place the fabric on a prepared subgrade area covering the full width of the subbase layer being protected. Place fabric in a loose and unstretched condition to minimize shifting, puncture, and/or tearing of the fabric. Overlap fabric roll-ends and edges a minimum of 300 mm (12 inches) with adjacent material. Place subbase material within 2 weeks after placement of fabric to minimize exposure. Place subbase material in a manner to minimize slippage of the fabric.
B. Damaged geotextiles, as identified by the Engineer, shall be replaced immediately.
