About this file
This document contains a set of questions and answers related to a federal construction contract opportunity to restore the Dorchester Heights Monument and hardscapes within a national park. The opportunity involves replacing any irrigation systems disrupted by construction work, installing erosion control barriers around the perimeter and at tree protection areas, attaching wind screens to the existing perimeter fence to serve as a construction fence rather than installing a new interior fence, and using hand tools only for excavation in the area of below-grade fortifications. Clarification is provided that drawings are sufficient for pricing sign engraving work, concrete footings are required for erosion control barrier fence posts, and soil disposal costs cannot be determined without repeating analysis.

Q&A
Discipline Sheet Detail Spec Description Answer
1 Site L32-L34 The scope of the D/B irrigation system is unclear. The existing irrigation drawings show that the park has full coverage and there is not going to be a significant difference to the overall layout of the park. Is the intent to replace anything disrupted by the work? Please clearly define the scope of the irrigation system.
The irrigation systems drawings are the most recent drawings available. The components of the existing system not disturbed or damaged by the work of this contract may remain and be incorporated into the new irrigation system. The intent is for the contractor to turn over an operating system after any repairs due to construction operations have occurred.
2 Site L26 Drawing L26 shows the elevations of the new granite entrance signs, however the information provided is not enough to price the engraving. Are shop drawings of the existing signs available to the engraving can be accurately quoted?
Drawing L26 provides information on the overall sign dimensions along with the relative size and quantity of engraved characters. This should be sufficient for an price quote. The Contractor will be responsible for final verification of text fonts and for producing shop drawings.”
3 Site C300 We have several questions regarding EROSION CONTROL BARRIER SUPER SILT FENCE on C300:
a. Erosion control barrier consists of 6-10 ft chainlink fencing. Perimeter construction fencing and tree protection fencing requires 8 ft chain link fencing. If 8 ft chainlink fencing is incorporated into the erosion control barrier, can it double as construction fencing and or tree protection fencing in locations where these requirements overlap?
b. In addition to the entire perimeter of the construction site, "Erosion control barrier" is shown at the tree protection areas, slope protection areas and around the monument itself.
Please confirm "Erosion control barrier" is intended for these locations and not wattles. There is no distinction on the drawings between wattles and super silt fence. Please clarify extent of each as there is a very significant cost difference.
c. Erosion control barrier super silt fence detail indicates 40" deep concrete footing.
Considering this fencing runs along existing site fencing and through root protection zones, are concrete footings actually desired by the Park? Are driven posts an acceptable alternative?
a. Yes
b. Wattles are for Slopes all other is Erosion control barriers c.Where Fence Post are installed Footings must be installed.
4 Site Civil Civil drawings show construction fencing required around the perimeter of the jobsite.
Considering the project site is already surrounded by an approximately 6' high permanent fence, would it be acceptable to attach wind screen to the existing permanent fence and utilize that as the construction fence instead of installing another fence along the inside of the existing fence that would possibly interfere with construction/landscaping operations?
Yes
5 Site 31 10 00 Was any chemical analysis completed on the soil for disposal? Typically, urban soils are contaminated and require disposal at a landfill or other approve facility. For purposes of this project, should it be assumed that all soils are clean and would be suitable for unrestricted disposal? Without repeating analysis, it is not possible to determine soil disposal costs.
Yes
6 Site GO.2 Note C Refer to note C on G0.2. Note states “All excavation in the area of the below grade start fortification shall be conducted with hand tools only.” Please confirm if demolition of concrete and excavation of existing base material can be completed with equipment.
Hand Tools Only . Per Plan
