Section 1.4.E of the micropile specification states that "Permanent casing is required to a depth equal to depth of bedrock surface or a minimum of 10-feet below final grade, whichever is greater". Drawing S6.00 indicates that permanent casing is to be drilled to a depth of 2' into glacial till layer, and that a maximum of 12' of casing per pile is to be assumed for estimating purposes. Please clarify which requirements govern.
Please use Detail A on Sheet S6.00 for the governing requirements of the micropile and casing. The pile casing for each micropile shall be embedded 2 feet into glacial till.
The average depth of the glacial till is approximately 10 feet, but varies across the site.
Contracting 316333
Section 1.7.A of the micropile specification states that the "maximum variation of any pile from its planned or indicated location at the cut-off elevation shall not exceed one (1) inch unless approved by Contracting Officer." Industry standard for micropile tolerance in plan view is 3 inches. As currently prescribed, the drilled micropiles will require that additional controls, efforts, and costs be expended to ensure that the strict tolerances can be met. In light of this, would the industry-standard 3 inch tolerance in plan view be acceptable on this project?
A 3" tolerance from the centerline of the pile to the indicated plan location is acceptable. The tolerances for plumbness and pile cutoff elevation shall remain as specified in the specs.
Contracting S6.00 A 316333
Section 2.1.A.3 of the micropile specification requires a 28-day micropile grout strength of 6,000 psi, while Drawing S6.00 notes a micropile grout strength of 5,000 psi. Please clarify which minimum grout strength is correct.
Please use 5,000 psi for the minimum grout strength per the detail on Sheet S6.00
Contracting S6.00 A 316333
Section 2.1.B.1 of the micropile specification calls for piles to be reinforced with a Gr. 150 reinforcing bar, while Drawing S6.00 shows a Gr. 75 reinforcing bar. Please clarify which grade of reinforcing steel is correct.
Please use 75 KSI threaded reinforcing bars per the detail on Sheet S6.00
Contracting S6.00 A 316333
Section 3.2.A.1.c of the micropile specification calls for a minimum drill hole diameter of "11- 7/8 inches as determined by the outside of the casing", while Drawing S6.00 shows a 9-5/8 inch diameter casing. Please clarify which minimum pile diameter is required on this project.
Please use 9-5/8" outside diameter casings per the detail on Sheet S6.00

Contracting 316333
Section 3.3.A of the micropile specification requires two load tests "per pile design", one verification test and one proof test. Please confirm that there is only one pile design for the project and therefore only two load tests required for the project.
Based on the borings and Geotechinal Report which show the presence of strong glacial till with minimal variation in the depth we felt that a larger testing program was not required. However, given the large quantity of piles we would be OK increasing the number of proof tests on production piles from 1 to 6 with the option to reduce that to 3 following the successful performance of the piles tested. The numbers of verification tests on sacrifical piles shall remain as 1.
Contracting 316333
Section 3.2.A.10 of the micropile specification indicates "do not progress a new hole, pressure-grout, or post-grout, within a pile radius of 5 pile diameters or 5 feet, whichever is greater, of a micropile until the grout for that micropile has set for 24 hours or longer." Micropile grout sets very quickly, generally reaching its initial set within a matter of hours. The "24 hour rule" has widely been interpreted to mean "the next day", but as written can be highly problematic since it precludes any work from taking place until the end of the following shift - thus becoming a "40 hour rule". Wisely, many specifications reference a 12 or 16 hour timeframe in this situation, still providing ample set time for fresh grout, while also allowing any adjacent work to take place at the start of the following shift. Can the language in this section be modified to reflect a 12 or 16 hour wait time instead of the 24 hour period currently specified?
The 24 hour wait time can be changed to a minimum 16 hour wait time so that adjacent work can being the next day.
Contracting 316333
Section 3.3.A of the micropile specification references two types of tension tests (verification and proof), then goes on to reference ASTM D1143 which is a compression testing standard.
Please confirm that the correct reference in this subsection should be to ASTM D-3689, "Standard Test Methods for Deep Foundations Under Static Axial Tensile Load ".
The reference to ASTM D-1143 in Section 3.3.A of the micropile specifications should be replaced with a reference to ASTM D-3689.

Please provide sections showing existing construction depths, materials, construction method, and any and all other details required to quantify what needs to be removed and how we will establish mean and methods.
21 A5.1 Existing marble cornice at level 3 is detailed on A5.1. Please verify that this drawing shows actual configuration of existing unit within the wall. Please detail how this unit will be anchored upon reset- or confirm that current cantilever is sufficient to support stone. Note that this cornice is approximately 4’ 9” wide and is balanced on top of a 2’ 0” wide wall.
Need anchoring detail?
22 A5.3 Existing marble cantilevered slab at level 4, as shown on A5.3, shows an even more precarious Need anchoring detail?
23 S2.1 Drawings S2.1, S4.1, and S4.1 (There are two different S4.1 drawings) call for 10” CMU walls.
Yet architectural sections show 12” CMU as being required to fill backup void. Please clarify- it appears the CMU shown on 4/S2.1 is in conflict with the wall construction and shown on A5.3.
A5.5, A5.6 and A5.7.
