About this file
This document is a Section 60 technical specification for Thermoplastic Traffic Stripes and Markings, likely for a municipal transportation or public works department. The specification details the requirements for applying reflectorized thermoplastic traffic stripes and markings, including descriptions of materials, application methods, and measurement standards. The specification covers various types of traffic markings including skip lines, solid lines, pavement messages, and directional arrows in multiple widths ranging from 4" to 24" lines, with measurement and payment defined for linear feet and gross miles.
The contract includes multiple payment line items (A711-1 through A711-8-241) for different types and sizes of thermoplastic traffic markings, with specific technical requirements such as compound composition, glass sphere inclusions, and application thickness. The thermoplastic compound must be a city-approved mixture of organic binders, glass spheres, and pigment, applied by mechanical extrusion or spraying in a molten state. Reflective glass spheres must be applied at 1 pound per 20 square feet, with at least 20% being water-white true spheres. Crosswalks, stop bars, symbols, and lane lines must maintain an average thickness of 0.090 inches, and all newly applied stripes must be protected from vehicle damage until properly cured.

SECTION 60 - THERMOPLASTIC TRAFFIC STRIPES AND MARKINGS
Item No. Title
60.1 DESCRIPTION
60.2 MATERIALS
60.3 APPLICATION
60.4 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
60.5 BASIS OF PAYMENT
60.1 DESCRIPTION
The work under this section consists of placing reflectorized traffic stripes and markings in accordance with the details shown in the plans, using a thermoplastic compound meeting CITY approval.
60.2 MATERIALS
The thermoplastic compound shall consist of a CITY approved mixture of appropriate organic binders, glass spheres and pigment.
60.3 APPLICATION
The thermoplastic compound shall be extruded or sprayed onto a clean, prepared surface in a molten state by mechanical means. Where the compound is to be applied to cement concrete pavement, a sealing primer shall be used. Preformed materials, which are directly applied to the pavement, will be permitted as an alternate to the extruded or sprayed application technique for pavement messages and transverse markings only.
All newly applied stripes, stop bars, symbols and lane lines shall be protected from vehicle damage until proper curing takes place.
Crosswalks, stop bars, symbols and lane lines shall have an average thickness of 0.090 inch (2.3 mm).
Reflective glass spheres shall be applied immediately behind the striping mechanism at the rate of 1 pound per 20 square feet of compound. At least 20 per cent of the spheres, by count, shall be water-white true spheres inclusions.
60.4 METHOD MEASUREMENT
The quantities to be paid for under this section shall be as follows:
A.) The net length, in linear feet, of each of the various types of thermoplastic lines, stripes and bands, authorized and acceptably applied.
B.) The number of thermoplastic pavement messages and of directional arrows, authorized and acceptably applied.
C.) The total traversed distance in gross miles of thermoplastic skip line. The actual applied line is 37.5 per cent of the transverse distance for a 3:5 ratio. This equates to 1980 feet of marking per mile of single line.
D.) The total transverse distance in net miles of thermoplastic solid line.
60.5 BASIS OF PAYMENT
The contract price per linear foot or gross mile for each separate type of line or stripe, and the contract unit price each, for pavement messages and directional arrows shall be full compensation for all work specified in this section.
Payment shall be made under:
