About this file
This document is a technical specification section (Section 34) for Pressure Pipe Restraint, prepared for a city engineering project. The specification provides detailed requirements for restraining pressure pipes, specifically focusing on ductile iron pipes and mechanical joint restraint methods. The document mandates that all pressure pipes must be restrained using either locked-type joints manufactured by U.S. Pipe and Foundry Company or mechanical restraining devices like the "Megalug 2000PV". The specification prohibits the use of thrust blocks and requires specific technical standards for joint restraint, including minimum wall thickness, joint flexibility, and pressure resistance capabilities.
The technical specification outlines precise engineering requirements for mechanical joint restraint devices, specifying that restraining devices must be manufactured from ductile iron, heat-treated to a minimum hardness of 370 BHN, and capable of maintaining a working pressure of at least 250 psi with a minimum safety factor of 2:1. The document provides comprehensive guidelines for pipe joint construction, including requirements for restraint at bends, mechanical joints, and potential future line extensions. While the specification is highly technical, it is part of a broader infrastructure project context, specifically related to the Grant Funded Construction of Rummell Road Trail in St. Cloud, Florida, which involves trail and sidewalk construction with partial funding from the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Recreational Trails Program.

SECTION 34 - PRESSURE PIPE RESTRAINT
Item No. Title
34.1 GENERAL
34.2 RESTRAINED JOINT CONSTRUCTION
| 34.3 | MECHANICAL RESTRAINING DEVICES |
| 34.3.1 | General |
| 34.3.2 | Joint Restraint Device |
34.1 GENERAL
Pressure pipe, fittings, mechanical joints, and other items requiring restraint shall be braced with restraining assemblies as determined by the CITY ENGINEER or designee and as specified in Section 34 herein and the standard drawings.
All pressure pipe shall be restrained as specified in Sections 34.2 and 34.3. The use of thrust blocks for pressure pipe and fittings shall be prohibited.
Ductile iron pressure pipe and fittings shall be restrained following the criteria established in Sections 34.2 and 34.3.
At all mechanical joints, on PVC pipe, where future tie-ins or line extensions are planned, ductile iron "gripper" flanges shall also be required and installed on each pipe entering into the mechanical joint(s). Should other mechanical joints such as gate valves be in close proximity to the tie-in/line extension location, such other mechanical joints shall also be restrained to prevent slippage to the satisfaction of the CITY ENGINEER or designee. (See Standard Drawings for details.)
34.2 RESTRAINED JOINT CONSTRUCTION
Sections of piping requiring restrained joints shall be constructed using pipe and fittings with restrained "Locked-type" joints (Tyton Joint with Field Lok Gasket) manufactured by U. S. Pipe and Foundry Company. The joints shall be capable of holding against withdrawal for line pressures 50 percent above the normal working pressure. Any restrained joints that allow for elongation upon pressurization will not be allowed in those locations where the pipe comes out of the ground.
Restrained pipe joints that achieve restraint by incorporating cut out sections in the wall of the pipe shall have a minimum wall thickness at the point of cut out that corresponds with the minimum specified wall thickness for the rest of the pipe.
Wherever 2-45 bends are used in place of a 90 bend and the minimum restrained joints required from one 45 bend extend beyond the other 45 bend, the 2-45 bends will be considered as though a 90 bend were located midway between the 2-45 bends.
34.3 MECHANICAL RESTRAINING DEVICES
34.3.1 GENERAL
Mechanical Restraining Devices as specified herein may be substituted for the restrained "Locked-Type" joints manufactured by the ductile iron pipe and fitting manufacturer. The restraining device shall be "Megalug 2000PV" or approved equal. (See standard drawings for number of joints to be restrained per “Restrained Pipe Table.”)
34.3.2 JOINT RESTRAINT DEVICE
Mechanical joint restraint shall be incorporated in the design of the follower gland and shall include a restraining mechanism which, when actuated, imparts multiple wedging action against the pipe, increasing its resistance as the pressure increases. Flexibility of the joint shall be maintained after burial. Glands shall be manufactured of ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536-80. Restraining devices shall be of ductile iron heat treated to a minimum hardness of 370 BHN. Dimensions of the gland shall be such that it can be used with the standardized mechanical joint bell and tee-head bolts conforming to ANSI A21.11 and ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53. Twist-off nuts shall be used to insure proper actuating of the restraining devices.
The mechanical joint restraint device shall have a working pressure of at least 250 psi with a minimum safety factor of 2:1.
