This document is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the clean salt water ballast system on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19). The specific work involves a comprehensive maintenance procedure for the ballast tank No. 9-40-2-W, with a total capacity of 27,158 gallons. The work includes visual inspection of existing preservation coating, marking corroded or damaged areas, general cleaning to Level III standards, manhole cover installation, and extensive repair work such as welding deteriorated welds, repairing plate defects, and replacing up to 10 square feet of deteriorated plate and 4 linear feet of defective stiffener.
The task is part of a larger ship repair and maintenance project, with a contractor work start date of 1/12/2026 and completion date of 5/15/2027. Special requirements include working around a fire zone boundary and fabricating a non-flammable closure. The work will be conducted in the Clean Salt Water Ballast tank and Air Conditioning Machinery Room, with specific technical requirements for surface preparation, welding, non-destructive testing, and preservation. The instruction is marked FOUO (For Official Use Only) and includes detailed procedural steps, material references, and appendices for job summary and material listing.
