About this file

This document is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the JP-5 Tank (9-109-1-J) on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19). The specific work includes commercial blast cleaning of the tank, visual inspection for structural integrity and damage, repairing welds and plate defects, removing and installing new deteriorated plates and stiffeners, and applying preservation coatings. The work is part of a larger ship repair and maintenance project scheduled from January 12, 2026 to May 15, 2027, with the tank repair to be performed at the Fleet Activities Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan.

Key technical requirements include commercial blast cleaning to SSPC-SP 6 standards, welding repairs totaling one linear foot of deteriorated welds, base metal weld buildup of 60 square inches, removal and replacement of 10 square feet of deteriorated plate and 4 linear feet of defective stiffeners, and installation of new manhole covers and bolting rings. The instruction notes potential lead hazards, requires Level II cleaning, and mandates nondestructive testing and leak testing of new welds. The work will be coordinated by the Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center (SRF-JRMC) with specific requirements for fire safety, utility services, and quality assurance inspections.
