About this file
This document is a vibracore survey report prepared by Land & Sea Surveying for the Sykes Creek Phase II Muck Removal Project in Florida. The project purpose is to restore portions of Sykes Creek to its original depth and deposit dredged muck material within a refurbished dredged material management area (DMMA) facility. The survey was conducted between September 30 and October 27, 2014, utilizing a 20-foot Monarch vessel equipped with an A-Frame survey system. The scope of work included performing hydrographic surveys within the Sykes Creek estuary and existing canal system, preparing topographic surveys for the upland portion of Kiwanis, and collecting 30 vibracore borings throughout the survey area to establish material type, depth, and muck sediment thickness. The surveys employed RTK GPS positioning based on NGS Monuments using NAD 83 Florida Zone 901 East State Plane Coordinates and NAVD '88 vertical datum. All fieldwork was conducted under the direction of Tim R. Carlile, P.L.S. (Florida Registered Surveyor Number 5170), who certified that the surveys met minimum technical standards for land surveying in Florida per Chapter 5J-17, Florida Administrative Code.
The vibracore sampling program extracted bottom material samples for geotechnical and environmental testing using an aluminum tube mounted on an A-frame vibracoring system. Core samples were collected onsite using a core pusher and sampling tray, with muck portions retained for laboratory testing and analysis. The survey data documented existing bathymetry conditions, muck layer thickness and elevation, and subsurface composition across multiple boring locations designated as Vibracore A through Vibracore J and AA through DD. Muck layer depths varied significantly across the project area, ranging from approximately 2.43 feet to 8.5 feet in thickness, with elevations of top-of-muck readings ranging from -9.94 feet to -15.35 feet NAVD '88. The survey team comprised eight personnel including surveyors, geotechnical specialists, technicians, and administrative support. No pricing, contract award information, or procurement timeline details are provided in this technical survey documentation.

PURPOSE
To restore portions of Sykes Creek to its original depth and deposit the dredged muck material within a refurbished dredged material management area (DMMA) facility.
SCOPE OF WORK
Land & Sea Surveying will provide all equipment and labor resources necessary to research and locate the existing primary control monuments. Land & Sea Surveying will perform a hydrographic survey within the Sykes Creek estuary and the existing canal system. Land & Sea Surveying will perform the survey efforts in a manner that provides accurate existing bathymetry and determines the depth of muck within the survey area. The Land & Sea Surveying’s resultant bathymetric data will be sufficient to perform engineering analysis and dredge volume computations, to document existing site conditions, and to evaluate and document the thickness of muck layers. Land & Sea Surveying will prepare a topographic survey for all of upland portion of Kiwanis. Land & Sea Surveying will collect 30 vibracore borings within the survey area to help establish material type and depth and thickness of muck sediments. Land & Sea Surveying will probe in several locations within the project area to confirm elevation of top of muck and top of hard bottom.
SURVEY METHODS
The Vibracore was mounted on an “A” frame to collect bottom material samples for geotechnical testing and testing contaminants. Salinity readings are taken with the Odom DigibarPro for speed of sound calibration. Hypack NAV software was used to record the location the sample was taken.
1) Land & Sea Surveying will collect 30 Vibracore borings within the survey area to establish material type and depth. Land & Sea Surveying will extract the samples onsite using a core pusher and sampling tray.
Land & Sea Surveying will employ a push pole sample with lip sediment retainer between each core to supplement the core sampling effort. Land & Sea Surveying will retain the muck portion of the composite Vibracore boring samples for testing by others.
2) TAYLOR and Land & Sea Surveying will base the exact location of the vibracore borings on initial bathymetric data collected by Land & Sea Surveying and discussions between the two parties.
3) Land & Sea Surveying will also probe all areas within the project area to confirm elevation of top of muck and bottom of muck.
4) Land & Sea Surveying will set the pole on the top of muck with the position and elevation collected via GPS. Land & Sea Surveying will then push the pole through the muck to hard bottom.
Land & Sea Surveying will again take the position and elevation reading. Land & Sea Surveying will take both elevations along the same baselines as surveyed with the acoustic hydrographic system.

PROCEDURE
The sampling team used a probe to locate the muck and its elevation. They then connected the aluminum tube to the vibracore and pushed it through the muck into the sand as far as possible.
After the team collected the samples, they measured the length of the sediment collection in the tube and then push the contents into a pvc pipe exposing the color gradient of the sediment and the changes from sand to muck. After identification and photographs, the muck was homoginized and a portion was placed into a 500ml. jar with a blue cap for environmental testing and the remainder placed into a bag for geotechnical testing.
