About this file

This memorandum provides recommendations for shielding requirements for a medical imaging room in a Veterans Affairs medical center. It details that the room will be used for up to two fluoroscopy exams per week and calculates that approximately 30 exams could be performed before reevaluation of shielding needs. No additional shielding is currently required given the limited use, but the room must be posted as a radiation area when imaging equipment is in use.

The related federal contract opportunity is for renovation of approximately 11,000 square feet of space on the 7th floor of the main hospital building at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The project scope involves demolishing existing interior spaces and renovating the area to relocated the GI procedure clinic. It will also update mechanical, electrical, plumbing and other building systems. The contract value is estimated between $2-5 million. The solicitation is scheduled to post on October 15, 2020 to the SAM.gov platform. The NAICS code is 236220 and it is set aside for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses. The bid opening is scheduled for November 16, 2020 and a pre-bid conference will be held.

Department of Memorandum Veterans Affairs

Date: June 1, 2020

From: Alex Paul Radiation Safety Officer

Subj: 7AN – Room 7207 Shielding

To: Biomedical Engineering

ACCOMPANYING 36C25221B0002 0002

The following assumptions were derived from Pulmonary Staff and NCRP Report No.

147:

Current weekly patient load is 2 exams per week.

Per calculations, 30 exams could be performed before a reevaluation is needed.

Distance was calculated from drawings provided by Guidon Design.

If above assumptions have changed or if any dimensions relating to the placement of equipment or walls are changed, the required shielding will need to be recalculated.

RECOMMENDATIONS

No shielding is currently required for the limited C-Arm use in room 7207. The room must be posted with Caution – Radiation Area when the C-Arm is in use.
