Summary: Geotechnical Engineering Evaluation Report
This is a geotechnical engineering evaluation report for the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center boiler replacement and controls upgrade project in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. The report documents subsurface conditions discovered through soil boring and exploration activities conducted in July 2021 to support foundation design for new construction. Ten borings (B-1 through B-10) were drilled to depths ranging from 21 to 32 feet, with drilling performed by Northern Test Boring using spun and driven casing methods. Observed water depths ranged from 3.3 to 16 feet across the site. The exploration identified shallow asphalt pavement layers (3 to 9 inches), followed by variable fill materials and native soils consisting primarily of sand, gravel, silt, and clay mixtures in dense to very dense conditions. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed throughout the borings, and rock was encountered at depths of approximately 13 to 21 feet in several locations, identified as slightly to moderately weathered quartz granodiorite with highly fractured, high-angle-to-vertical joints.
Appendix A establishes limitations and use parameters, specifically excluding environmental assessment of hazardous materials, mold and biological contaminant investigation, and vapor intrusion evaluation from the scope. The report is intended solely to assist project engineers in foundation and ground floor slab design and is not a specification for bidding. Appendix B provides detailed exploration logs documenting material descriptions, Standard Penetration Test blow counts, moisture content, and lab testing results for each boring. The logs follow consistent terminology for soil classification and include notes on drilling methods, water observations, and subsurface conditions encountered. Appendix C is a placeholder for Building No. 8 subsurface and foundation design information not detailed in the excerpted pages provided.
