About this file
This is a work instruction document for ABB MV Switchgear shipping preparation procedures at the Mebane, North Carolina facility.
The document provides detailed procedural guidance for preparing medium voltage switchgear for shipment. Key procedures include: closing and securing front and rear doors and panels; installing shipping member labels on all shipping bases and extensions; installing storage, jacking, and bus support installation labels (bus support labels not required on 63kA gear); protecting all corners with cardboard corners while avoiding placement of tape on UL labels; installing plastic covers to provide 100 percent coverage of the shipping section, rolling covers over the top of equipment, and securing excess material with clear tape; installing frame/pallet identification sheets and caution signs on sides and front of sections; applying stretch wrap from the bottom of sections in overlapping layers to an 88-inch height and securing with clear tape; preparing plenums by placing them on pallets, installing storage labels, strapping to pallets, installing plastic covers, and shrink wrapping; and generating and obtaining required approvals on the Ship Information Form (1VAM-T0005-020003) from group leaders, project managers, and shipping leaders before shipment. Additional responsibilities include booking dedicated trucks with detailed shipment information including weights and dimensions, loading trucks with heaviest gears toward the front for load balancing and securing with straps or chains, verifying all items from the shipping information form are loaded, and providing the truck driver with a bill of lading and delivery documentation. All assembly personnel must follow quality workmanship standards and health and safety requirements, including use of safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe shoes, and safety harnesses when working at heights.
