WIRING DEVICES SECTION 262725 - 1

SECTION 262725 - WIRING DEVICES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes the following:

1. Ground-fault circuit interrupters.

2. Single- and double-pole switches and dimmer switches.

3. Device wall plates.

4. Floor service outlets and multioutlet assemblies.

A. Related Sections include the following:

1. Division 27 Sections for audio-visual devices for coordination with various multimedia applications, including audio and visual devices.

2. Section 280560 “Common Work Results for Technical Security Systems (TSS)” and related TSS subsystem Sections for additional electrical infrastructure requirements, for deterrent, detection, and response systems, and for Security Management Systems

Enterprise (SMSe). This Section includes interface between Technical Security Systems

(TSS) and general electrical systems.

1.2 TECHNOLOGY RESTRICTIONS

A. In accordance with Chapter 1 of the OBO Electrical Code, switches may not contain ultrasonic technology, or wireless technology, even if not implemented. This includes prohibition of Wi-

Fi, Bluetooth, Near Field Communication, ZigBee, Low Power Wide Area Networks, and similar technology.

B. Floor mounted receptacles are not permitted in CAA.

1.3 DEFINITIONS

A. AFCI: Arc-fault circuit interrupter.

B. DFCI: Dual function circuit interrupters; utilize both GFCI and AFCI detection technology.

C. EMI: Electromagnetic interference.

D. GFCI: Ground-fault circuit interrupter, unless noted otherwise.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.

B. Shop Drawings: List of legends and description of materials and process used for premarking wall plates.

C. Field quality-control test reports.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of wiring device through one source from a single manufacturer.

B. Comply with the requirements of the OBO Electrical Code (NFPA 70 “National Electrical Code” as amended by OBO).

1. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled in accordance with

Chapter 1 of the OBO Electrical Code by testing agency acceptable to Contracting

Officer/COR based upon input from OBO/PDCS/DE/EE, and marked for intended use.

1.6 COORDINATION

A. Receptacles for Government-Furnished Equipment (GFE):

1. General GFE: Match plug configurations where known. Otherwise, provide cord and plug sets matching equipment requirements.

2. Electrified Furniture (GFE Furniture) Wiring System:

a. 8 wire or 10 wire as coordinated with GFE.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 GENERAL

A. Wiring Devices: Provide U.S. NEMA type wiring devices and associated devices, boxes, and covers in CAA and as indicated on Drawings. Outside CAA all wiring devices shall be U.S.

NEMA type; with written approval of Contracting Officer/COR based on input from

OBO/PDCS/DE electrical engineer, exceptions may be made to use local devices. Receptacles other than 125-volt or 250-volt general-purpose convenience outlets shall be marked on cover plates with voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency. Matching plugs shall be provided and shall meet UL 498.

B. Wire and Cable: Select types of insulation according to application. See the OBO Electrical

Code for insulation types, operating temperatures, ambient temperature, and voltage classes.

Cable and wire sizes, types, and insulation shall be in accordance with U.S. standards to obtain suitable quality transmission for security, data, and other signal cables. Provide solid conductors for conductors sized 6.0 mm2 and smaller. Provide stranded conductors for conductors sized 10 mm2 and larger. Provide copper branch circuits and feeder conductors sized at 125 percent of full load capacity. Use full-sized neutral conductor and separate ground conductor for each circuit.

Circuits and feeders that supply power for electronic equipment may require oversized neutral to

compensate for high harmonic neutral currents; such feeders shall be identified and neutral increased to minimum of two times full rated size. Non-metallic sheathed cable (“Romex”), and armored or metal clad cable, Types AC or MC are prohibited.

2.2 RECEPTACLES

A. Receptacles, General: General-purpose receptacles shall be installed on 15 and 20-amp branch circuits, and shall be of grounding type with effective grounding contacts. NEMA type receptacles shall be used in all spaces. These shall comply with NEMA WD 6 and UL 498. GFCI protection shall be provided for receptacles in restrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, other wet areas and outdoors in accordance with the OBO Electrical Code.

1. A mix of NEMA type receptacles and local standard receptacles may be used in non-CAA spaces with the approval of Contracting Officer/COR based on input from OBO/PDCS/DE electrical engineer. Local standard receptacles shall be rated 220V, 13-A or 16-A;

receptacles rated 220V, 10-A are not permitted.

B. Straight-Blade and Twist Locking Receptacles: Heavy-Duty grade. NEMA 6-20R for 220V, 230V, or 240V applications.

1. Exception for TSS: NEMA 5-20R where 120V is used in lieu of 220V, 230V, or 240V applications.

C. NEMA 6-20R Neutral Pin Polarization: NEMA 6-20R receptacles rated at 250 volts used on a

2-pole, 3-wire grounding system (380Y/220, 400Y/230 or 415Y/240 volt) systems, shall have the

T-shaped slot of the receptacle used for connection of the white neutral wire

D. GFCI receptacles shall not be used. Outlets designated for GFCI protection shall be fed from general-use non-time delay GFCI breaker, either mounted within the panelboard or in a residual current device (RCD) enclosure adjacent to the panelboard feeding the branch circuit.

E. AFCI receptacles shall not be used. Outlets designed for AFCI protection shall be fed from AFCI circuit breaker mounted within panelboards.

1. Use of AFCI and DFCI breakers and circuits is only permitted for residential uses for 125V, 60 Hz applications in accordance with NFPA 70.

F. Provide one 20-A and one 15-A cord plug cap for each duplex receptacle, and two of each for each quadraplex receptacle. Plug caps shall be of the grounding type, utilizing only screw terminals for terminating conductors.

2.3 SWITCHES

A. Single- and Double-Pole Switches: Comply with UL 20.

B. Snap Switches: Heavy-Duty grade, quiet type; comply with UL 20.

C. Dimmer Switches: Comply with UL1472 – Solid-State Dimming Controls Modular, full-wave, solid-state units with integral, quiet on/off switches and audible frequency and EMI/RFI filters.

1. Control: [Provide full range, continuously variable control of light intensity, and flicker free operation. Continuously adjustable slider; with single-pole or three-way switching to suit connections.]

2. Operate at rated capacity across full ambient temperature range including modified capacities for ganging configurations which require removal of fins. Operation at rated capacity shall be possible across full ambient temperature range, without shortening design lifetime.

3. Possess power failure memory such that if power is interrupted and subsequently returned, lights will automatically return to same levels (dimmed setting, full on, or off) prior to power interruption for minimum period of two years.

4. When dimmer switch is in “off’ position, load shall be fully disconnected from line supply eliminating any leakage current.

5. Withstand electrostatic discharges up to 16,000 volts without impairment per IEC 801-2.

6. Withstand line-side surges without impairment to performance when subjected to surges of 6,000 volts, 200 amps per ANSI/IEEE C62.41C.

7. Provide preset 3-way control from the dimmer location regardless of the position of other

3-way switch location.

D. [Fluorescent Lamp Dimmer Switches: For renovation projects utilizing existing fluorescent lighting types, provide modular fluorescent lamp dimmer switches. Switches shall be compatible with dimmer ballasts; trim potentiometer to adjust low-end dimming; dimmer-ballast combination capable of consistent dimming with low end not greater than 20 percent of full brightness.]

2.4 FLOOR SERVICE FITTINGS

A. Floor service fittings are discouraged. Requests for limited use shall be submitted to Contracting

Officer/COR for approval with input from OBO/PDCS/DE/EE electrical engineer.

1. Refer to Article on TECHNOLOGY RESTRICTIONS regarding floor mounted receptacles.

2. Type: Modular, flush-type, dual-service units suitable for wiring method used.

3. Power Receptacle: NEMA, Configuration 6-20R, unless otherwise indicated or scheduled.

Colors shall match interior color scheme approved by the Contracting Officer/COR.

4. Signal Outlet: Blank cover with bushed cable opening, unless otherwise indicated or scheduled.

2.5 MULTIOUTLET ASSEMBLIES

A. Components of Assemblies: Products from a single manufacturer designed for use as a complete, matching assembly of raceways and receptacles.

B. Wire: 4.0 mm2.

2.6 FINISHES

A. Devices and face plates shall match or be provided as below[ or in accordance with wall plate and device finish schedule]. Single and combination types shall match corresponding wiring devices.

1. Face Plate-Securing Screws: Metal with head color to match plate finish.

2. Material for Finished Spaces: [Provide in accordance with wall plate and device finish schedule] [Gray device] [1-mm- thick, brushed stainless steel].

3. Material for Unfinished Spaces: Gray device; Galvanized steel face plate.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION - GENERAL

A. Install devices and assemblies level, plumb, and square with building lines. Comply with NECA

1.

B. Install equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions.

C. Install receptacles with consistent orientation, with ground pole on bottom for receptacles installed vertically, or with ground pole to right for receptacles installed horizontally.

D. Define each dimmer’s load type, assign each load to a zone, and set control functions.

E. Provide equipment at locations and in quantities indicated on drawings. Provide any additional equipment required to provide control intent.

F. Perform full-function testing on all completed assemblies. Statistical sampling is not acceptable.

G. Install wall dimmers to achieve indicated rating after derating for ganging according to manufacturer's written instructions.

H. Install unshared neutral conductors on line and load side of dimmers according to manufacturers' written instructions.

I. Arrangement of Devices: Unless otherwise indicated, mount flush, with long dimension vertical, and with grounding terminal of receptacles on top. Group adjacent switches under single, multigang wall plates where possible.

J. Remove wall plates and protect devices and assemblies during painting.

K. Adjust locations of floor service outlets to suit arrangement of partitions and furnishings.

3.2 MULTIMEDIA RECEPTACLE INSTALLATION

A. Where wall mounting is indicated or scheduled for various multimedia devices (e.g., flat panel displays), locate receptacles as follows:

1. Coordinate for elevation above finished floor.

2. Coordinate with mounting elements for multimedia devices, including brackets and hardware, and wall blocking.

3. Install with recessed receptacle boxes behind mounting hardware to allow for relief of plug and cord.

3.3 IDENTIFICATION

A. Comply with Division 26 Section on "Identification for Electrical Systems."

1. Receptacles: Identify panelboard and circuit number from which served. Use hot, stamped or engraved machine printing with black-filled lettering on face of plate, and durable wire markers or tags inside outlet boxes.

2. Switches: Where three or more switches are ganged, and elsewhere as indicated, identify each switch with approved legend engraved on wall plate.

3.4 CONNECTIONS

A. Ground equipment according to Section 260525 "Grounding and Bonding for Electrical

Systems."

B. Connect wiring according to Section 260518 "Low-Voltage Electrical Power Conductors and

Cables."

C. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer's published torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those specified in

UL 486A.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Perform the following field tests and inspections and prepare test reports:

1. After installing wiring devices and after electrical circuitry has been energized, test for proper polarity, ground continuity, and compliance with requirements.

2. Test GFCI operation with both local and remote fault simulations according to manufacturer's written instructions.

3. Test AFCI operation with both local and remote fault simulations according to manufacturer’s written instructions.

B. Remove malfunctioning units, replace with new units, and retest as specified above.
